Chapter 17 - Shadows on the Horizon

A year had passed since the dramatic downfall of Julian Cross and Vanessa Brooks. Whitmore Global had grown stronger, expanding its international shipping lanes and establishing new philanthropic initiatives across the country.

Daniel had settled comfortably into his role as CEO, balancing corporate innovation with the grounded wisdom forged through our past trials. The estate was peaceful, the staff was happy, and the bitter memories of the past seemed safely buried beneath layers of success and stability.

I sat in my private study at home, reviewing the annual audit reports by the crackling fireplace. Rosa quietly entered the room, placing a fresh cup of chamomile tea on my desk alongside a small, unmarked courier envelope.

"What is this, Rosa?" I asked, looking up from my reading glasses.

"It was dropped off at the service gate by an international courier service, Mrs. Whitmore," Rosa replied cautiously. "The guards checked it for security threats—it's clean of explosives or chemical residue. But there's no return address."

My instincts instantly flared. After everything we had been through, an anonymous courier envelope was never a random delivery.

"Thank you, Rosa. That will be all," I said calmly.

Once Rosa closed the study doors, I put on my reading gloves, picked up a letter opener, and carefully sliced open the heavy cream envelope. Inside was a single sheet of heavy-stock linen paper, embossed with a familiar, chilling emblem: an ornate silver cross.

Handwritten across the paper in sharp, elegant fountain pen ink was a short, cryptic message:

*“The game was never about Julian, Eleanor. The board is much larger than you think. Enjoy your peace while it lasts.”*

There was no signature. Just a small, intricate seal stamped in crimson wax.

I stared at the paper for a long moment, a cold chill running down my spine. Julian Cross was locked away for the rest of his life. Vanessa was serving twenty years in federal prison.

So who had sent the letter?

And more importantly—who was pulling the strings behind the curtain now?
