Chapter 13 - The Final Arraignment

The federal courtroom of the Southern District District Court was packed to the gills. Reporters, bloggers, curious onlookers, and legal analysts crammed into the wooden benches, all whispering excitedly beneath the towering neoclassical pillars of the courthouse.
At the defense table sat Linda Reynolds and my uncle Marcus. Both of them wore standard prison jumpsuits, their hair disheveled, the arrogance and aristocratic polish completely stripped away, replaced by the hunted, desperate panic of cornered animals.
When I walked through the double doors accompanied by Richard Sterling, the flashbulbs from the media gallery erupted like a thunderstorm. I didn’t look at them. I walked straight to the plaintiff’s table, my expression carved from stone.
Judge Harrison Miller, a stern, silver-haired jurist with a reputation for zero tolerance, banged his gavel twice.
“Order in the court,” Judge Miller commanded, his voice booming through the oak-paneled room. “We are here for the formal omnibus arraignment and bond review in the matter of *United States v. Linda Reynolds et al.* Counsel for the prosecution, you may present your amended indictments.”
The federal prosecutor stood up, buttoning his jacket, and stepped toward the podium.
“Your Honor, in light of newly recovered physical and digital evidence submitted by the plaintiff, Daniel Reynolds, the government is expanding the indictment,” the prosecutor announced clearly. “In addition to grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy, the defendants Linda Reynolds and Marcus Reynolds are now formally charged with systematic identity fraud, probate manipulation, and multi-million-dollar trust embezzlement spanning over two decades.”
At the defense table, Linda gasped audibly, grabbing her defense attorney’s arm. Her face turned chalk white. She whipped her head around, locking eyes with me across the courtroom. Her expression wasn't angry anymore—it was pure, unadulterated terror.
Her defense lawyer leaped to his feet. “Objection, Your Honor! This is an outrageous ambush! These new charges involve civil probate matters that have no place in a federal criminal proceeding!”
“Overruled, Counsel,” Judge Miller snapped, holding up a thick manila folder containing the adoption papers, embezzlement audits, and the USB drive transcripts I had delivered at midnight. “The court has reviewed the supplementary exhibits provided by plaintiff’s counsel. These documents establish a continuous pattern of systemic financial predation and fraudulent guardianship manipulation. Bail is formally revoked for both defendants as severe flight and witness-tampering risks.”
The gavel came down with a sharp, definitive crack that echoed like a gunshot.
Linda let out a choked sob, sinking back into her chair as a federal bailiff stepped forward to place her hands in cuffs once again. Uncle Marcus looked like he was about to collapse, staring blankly at the polished wooden floor.
As the bailiffs led them out through the side door toward the holding cells, Linda twisted around, her eyes locking onto mine one last time, mouthing words I couldn't hear over the roar of the media gallery.
I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply watched them walk out of my life forever.
Richard Sterling leaned over, whispering in my ear. “Well, Daniel. That’s checkmate. With these federal charges and the trust embezzlement documentation, they’re looking at a minimum of twenty years without parole. Their empire is gone.”

“Good,” I said quietly, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. “Let’s go home to my wife and son.”
