Chapter 19 - The JFK Runway Chase

The rain lashed against the windshield of Richard’s armored SUV as I slammed my foot down on the accelerator, pushing the engine past one hundred miles per hour on the deserted coastal highway leading toward JFK International Airport.
In the passenger seat, Richard was frantically tapping away on his encrypted satellite phone, coordinating with federal aviation authorities and airport security.
“Air traffic control confirms a private Gulfstream G650 registered to an offshore shell corporation just filed an emergency flight plan for Zurich, Switzerland, departing from Private Aviation Terminal 4,” Richard shouted over the roar of the engine. “They’re wheels-up in less than ten minutes!”
“Not if I have anything to say about it,” I growled, gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned translucent.
When the tactical operatives had breached the Hamptons estate, they hadn't come for documents. They had used a silent gas-vent canister through the guest room ventilation shaft to knock out Claire and Martha, abducting Claire and my seven-month-old son to use as absolute, unbreakable leverage against me.
My mother had tried to starve her. My uncle had tried to frame her. And now, Arthur Sterling had kidnapped my wife and child in a desperate bid to force me to drop every federal indictment and sign over my entire corporate empire.
We crashed through the automated security gates of Private Aviation Terminal 4, the metal barrier splintering like dry toothpicks against our reinforced bumper. Sirens wailed in the distance as airport security cars scrambled to intercept us, but I didn't stop.
I floored the SUV straight across the tarmac toward the illuminated runway where a sleek white private jet sat with its engines screaming, its boarding stairs still lowered.
As our SUV slid to a violent halt thirty feet from the Gulfstream’s door, the aircraft stairs lowered further, and an old, frail-looking man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses stepped out onto the metal platform, holding a small digital detonator in one hand.
It was Arthur Sterling.
Behind him, two armed guards stood holding Claire—who was conscious now, pale, trembling, but glaring at Arthur with unyielding fury—while one of them cradled little Leo in his arm, a tiny blanket wrapped around him.
I killed the engine, threw open my door, and stepped out onto the wet asphalt, raising both hands empty into the air.
“Arthur!” I roared, my voice carrying clearly over the screaming roar of the jet turbines. “Let them go! It’s me you want!”
Arthur smiled, stepping down onto the bottom stair of the aircraft, his eyes cold and calculating behind his glasses.
“Ah, the dutiful son,” Arthur called out, his voice sharp and steady despite the wind. “You’ve been a remarkably persistent thorn in my side, Daniel. You dismantled Linda’s empire, you locked away my brother Marcus, and you nearly exposed my entire offshore network.”
“You’re finished, Arthur,” I shouted, taking a slow step forward. “Federal marshals are five minutes behind us. Every bank account you own is frozen. You have nowhere to run.”
“Switzerland is very nice this time of year,” Arthur replied smoothly, raising the digital detonator slightly. “And I’m not running. I’m simply negotiating. You sign over your controlling shares of Reynolds Real Estate and file a motion to dismiss all federal embezzlement charges against my brother and Linda... and I’ll leave your wife and child right here on the tarmac. Refuse, and the jet departs with them on board. Forever.”
Claire looked down from the stairs, catching my eye. She didn't look scared. She shook her head fiercely, mouthing the words: *‘Don't do it, Daniel.’*
I locked eyes with Arthur. A slow, terrifying smile spread across my face—the same smile my mother had seen right before her empire collapsed.
“Arthur,” I said softly, my voice cutting through the wind. “Did you really think I didn’t trace your offshore accounts as well?”
Arthur’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about?”
“While you were busy planning this little kidnapping,” I said, taking another step forward, “Richard and I executed a global asset seizure on your primary British Virgin Islands shell corporation. Your accounts were drained twenty minutes ago.”
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. He looked down at his phone just as an emergency alert flashed across the screen.
In that exact split-second of distraction, I didn't hesitate. I drew the concealed weapon I had taken from the tactical operative in the Hamptons and fired a single, clean shot directly into the landing gear hydraulic line beneath the Gulfstream’s nose.
*Bang!*
Hydraulic fluid sprayed across the tarmac in a violent geyser. The aircraft’s nose dropped heavily to the ground with a deafening metallic screech.
Simultaneously, Richard Sterling rushed up the stairs from the opposite side, tackling the guard holding Leo while I leaped onto the platform, grabbing Arthur by the collar and slamming him against the aircraft bulkhead.

“Checkmate, Arthur,” I whispered in his ear as red-and-blue police cruiser lights finally flooded the runway from every direction.
