Chapter 9 - The Counter-Attack Fails

True to my prediction, my family’s retaliation came less than forty-eight hours later, but it didn't come from a courtroom or a boardroom—it came through the dirtiest, most desperate channel imaginable: fabricated scandal.
It was late evening when Richard Sterling called me back, sounding both amused and disgusted.
“Daniel, you won’t believe the desperation move your uncle Marcus and Linda’s defense team just tried to pull off,” Richard said, papers rustling on his end of the line.
“Let me guess,” I replied, pacing across my home office. “They filed a counter-suit claiming Claire was an unfit mother who abused substances?”
“Close,” Richard chuckled darkly. “They leaked a fabricated story to a trashy tabloid blog claiming that *you*—Daniel Reynolds—were laundering corporate funds through overseas shell companies in Singapore, and that Claire faked her malnutrition and the baby’s hypothermia as an elaborate insurance scam to extort your family.”
I stopped pacing, a sharp, cold smile forming on my lips. “An insurance scam? Involving a newborn baby and hospital records?”
“Desperate people do stupid things,” Richard noted. “The tabloid ran the story at noon today. But here’s why your family are absolute idiots: they didn't realize that federal investigators were already subpoenaing their communications. The wiretaps caught Uncle Marcus explicitly conspiring with Linda’s defense attorney to fabricate the whistleblower leak.”
“So what’s our counter-move?”
“We don’t even need to sue for defamation yet,” Richard said smoothly. “The federal prosecutor handling Linda’s grand larceny case just added a brand-new charge to her indictment: *Obstruction of Justice and Witness Tampering via Subornation of Perjury*. Uncle Marcus is currently being subpoenaed by a federal grand jury for questioning regarding his financial involvement in the smear campaign.”
I let out a low, satisfied laugh. “You’re telling me my uncle just walked straight into a federal conspiracy trap?”
“Headfirst, with bells on,” Richard confirmed. “By tomorrow morning, Marcus’s corporate bank accounts will be flagged for investigation as well. He tried to play dirty pool, and now he’s drowning in the same swamp.”
“Keep turning the screw, Richard. I want every single person who aided and abetted my mother’s crimes to feel the full weight of the law.”
“Consider it done, Daniel.”
I hung up the phone and walked out into the hallway. The penthouse was peaceful. Martha had put Leo down for the night, and Claire was sitting in the living room reading a book, looking healthier every single day. Her cheeks had some color back, and her eyes no longer held that hollow, haunted terror.
She looked up as I walked in, closing her book and offering a soft, warm smile.
“Was that Richard?” she asked.
“Yes,” I said, sitting down beside her and wrapping my arm around her shoulders. “Uncle Marcus tried to plant a fake tabloid story claiming we faked everything as an insurance scam.”
Claire’s smile faded, replaced by a flash of anxiety. “A tabloid story? Daniel, will people believe it? What if—what if CPS takes Leo away?”
“Hey, look at me,” I said gently, taking her face in my hands. “CPS reviewed the hospital records, the doctor’s sworn testimony, and the security footage. They know exactly who the victims are and who the criminals are. Uncle Marcus just committed federal witness tampering by trying to plant that story. The feds are already moving in on him.”
Claire let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding, leaning into my touch. “Your family is terrifying, Daniel. I never knew people could be so cruel for money.”
“They aren’t my family anymore,” I said firmly, my voice dead serious. “From now on, it’s just you, me, and Leo. No one else.”

Little did we know, while we sat there in the quiet warmth of our penthouse, the final pillar of my mother’s empire was about to collapse in spectacular fashion.
