Chapter 5 - The First Interrogation

The holding room at the Miami-Dade precinct was stark, windowless, and smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant and old coffee. Underneath the harsh buzz of the overhead fluorescent fixture, Linda Reynolds sat rigidly at a metal interrogation table, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her forehead, revealing eyes red-rimmed with shock and unbridled fury.
Across from her sat Detective Marcus Vance—not the doctor from the hospital, but a rugged, sharp-eyed local detective assigned to financial fraud cases who had coordinated with Richard Sterling. Next to him sat a court stenographer whose fingers hovered nervously over a stenotype machine.
“Let’s review this one more time, Mrs. Reynolds,” Detective Vance said, tapping a pen against the metal tabletop. “According to your bank statements, on July 14th, you transferred thirty-eight thousand dollars from a household account registered jointly to Daniel and Claire Reynolds into a private account under your sole control.”
“It wasn’t a theft!” Linda shrieked, slamming her palms onto the metal table so hard the water pitcher rattled. “It was a family transfer! Daniel told me to manage his affairs while he was out of the country! He’s my son! Mothers have a right to manage their children’s estates when they’re overwhelmed!”
Detective Vance didn't blink. He calmly slid a thick sheaf of printed documents across the table. “That’s fascinating, Mrs. Reynolds. Because according to sworn testimony from Daniel Reynolds, as well as digital communication logs retrieved from his devices, he explicitly designated those funds for his wife’s postpartum medical care, infant formula, utilities, and domestic nursing. Furthermore, you told his wife that his business contract had collapsed, which was a deliberate lie designed to isolate her.”
“She’s a manipulative liar!” Linda snarled, her face contorting with ugly malice. “That ungrateful little gold-digger trapped my son! She forced him into a shotgun marriage! We were just taking back what rightfully belonged to our family before she bled him dry!”
“Is that why you spent the money on a five-star luxury resort in Miami, sipping champagne by a rooftop pool while your daughter-in-law was suffering from severe malnutrition and hypothermia in a freezing apartment with a three-week-old infant?” Vance asked, his voice dangerously quiet.
Linda froze. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. For a fraction of a second, panic flickered in her eyes before her arrogance surged back.
“We didn’t know anything about that!” she lied, though her voice wavered. “Claire is dramatic! She likes playing the victim! If the apartment was cold, she should have paid her own bills!”
“With the money you stole?” Vance raised an eyebrow, pulling a sleek tablet from his briefcase. “You might want to watch this before you dig your grave any deeper, Mrs. Reynolds.”
He tapped the screen, turning the tablet toward her.
The built-in screen lit up with high-definition footage recorded inside my penthouse living room. It was the exact moment Linda and Vanessa had stood over Claire two weeks ago, mocking her, cutting off the funds, and threatening to take her baby away if she dared to contact me.
The audio echoed clearly in the small interrogation room: *“If you call Daniel, if you text him, if you whine to him and ruin his focus... my high-priced lawyers will make sure custody of that baby goes straight to me.”*
Linda stared at the screen, her breath hitching in her throat. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking old, frail, and utterly cornered.
“Where... where did you get this?” she whispered, her voice trembling.
“Your son installed a comprehensive, professional security and audio surveillance system throughout his entire home two years ago,” Detective Vance said smoothly, locking the tablet screen. “Every single room is recorded and backed up to encrypted cloud storage. Daniel didn't just give us bank records, Mrs. Reynolds. He gave us a 4K cinematic confession of your entire crime.”
Down the hall, in a separate holding room, Vanessa was experiencing a very similar meltdown. Handcuffed to a metal chair, she was weeping hysterically into her designer sweater, screaming for her lawyer, her mother, and anyone who would listen.
“This is insane!” Vanessa wailed as a female officer slid a formal arrest warrant across the desk. “We’re respectable people! We belong in society! You can’t arrest us over some stupid family drama!”
“Grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and willful endangerment of a minor aren't family drama, Ms. Reynolds,” the officer replied impassively, clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs tighter around Vanessa’s wrists. “That’s a felony rap carrying up to fifteen years in state prison.”
Back in the main interrogation room, Detective Vance stood up, buttoning his suit jacket and looking down at Linda with absolute contempt.
“You have the right to remain silent, Mrs. Reynolds,” Vance recited coldly. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Your arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow morning. I hope you enjoy your stay in Miami—because you won't be seeing that rooftop pool again for a very, very long time.”

As the heavy metal door slammed shut, locking her inside in total darkness, Linda buried her face in her manicured hands and began to scream.
