Chapter 18 - The Siege of the Hamptons Estate

“They’ve jammed the local cell towers and cut the main power grid,” Richard said, his voice dropping into a tense, tactical whisper as he pulled a heavy steel key from his pocket and unlocked a concealed wall panel behind the bookshelf. Inside sat a Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol and two extra magazines.
I stepped closer, my pulse pounding with cold, crystalline clarity. “How many men do you think Arthur sent?”
“Professionals,” Richard replied grimly, checking the slide on the pistol. “Corporate fixers. Not street thugs. They’re here to wipe out the remaining evidence in the trust files and make it look like a tragic electrical fire.”
“Where is Claire?” My voice tightened with sudden, fierce panic.
“The master guest wing is on the third floor, reinforced with steel-core security doors and independent panic room locks,” Richard said quickly. “She and Leo are safe inside unless someone breaches the main house.”
Suddenly, a heavy, concussive *boom* echoed from the front foyer, followed by the shattering of reinforced glass. Heavy combat boots stomped across the hardwood floors downstairs.
“They’re inside,” I said. I grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker from the hearth, weighing it in my hand. It wasn't a gun, but in close quarters, it was lethal.
“Stay behind me,” Richard whispered, stepping out into the dark hallway with his pistol raised.
We crept silently down the grand staircase toward the second-floor landing. Below us in the moonlit foyer, two figures dressed in matte-black tactical gear moved with practiced military precision, sweeping their flashlights across the antique furniture.
“Sector Two is clear,” one muttered into a tactical comms unit. “Moving up to clear the upper levels.”
As the first operative placed his boot on the bottom step of the staircase, I didn't wait. I leaped down from the half-landing above, swinging the heavy brass fireplace poker with every ounce of strength in my body.
*Crack!*
The poker struck the operative squarely across his tactical helmet, sending him sprawling backward onto the marble floor where he lay motionless.
The second operative spun around instantly, raising his suppressed rifle toward my chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, two sharp cracks echoed through the foyer. Richard fired twice from the top of the stairs. The operative’s tactical vest absorbed the impact, but the force spun him around, sending him crashing into the display case.
I lunged forward, tackling him to the ground and ripping his weapon away, pressing the barrel straight against his chest plate.
“Who sent you?” I snarled, my voice vibrating with raw fury. “Arthur Sterling? Where is he?”
The man coughed, spitting blood onto the marble, but a cold, mocking smile touched his lips.
“You’re... too late, Reynolds,” the operative choked out. “Arthur isn’t here... he’s already boarding a private jet out of JFK. And he took your mother’s final asset with him.”
My blood ran cold. “What asset?”
The operative chuckled weakly before passing out from the shock.
I stood up slowly, looking at Richard, who was breathing heavily, his gun still raised toward the dark corridor.
“Daniel,” Richard said, his face pale. “What did he mean by ‘your mother’s final asset’?”
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. A single notification flashed on the screen from a secure satellite tracker I had secretly installed inside Claire’s diaper bag.
The tracker was moving fast—heading west toward JFK Airport at ninety miles an hour.

Claire and Leo weren't safe in the panic room. They had been taken.
