Chapter 11 - Fractured Trust

"SNIPER! DOWN!" Deputy Ramsey screamed, tackling Torres to the wooden floorboards just as a high-velocity suppressed round shattered the cabin window, embedding itself deep into the stone fireplace.
Outside, automatic gunfire erupted across the clearing. Muzzle flashes illuminated the tree line as a team of mercenary enforcers—hired by Julian Vance's remaining financial partners—opened fire on the federal convoy.
"Return fire!" the tactical team leader bellowed over the radio.
Inside the cabin, Brian hugged the encrypted drive to his chest, crawling behind the heavy stone chimney as bullets ripped through the thin wooden walls, sending splinters flying like shrapnel.
"Harper, stay down!" Ramsey shouted, returning fire through the broken window with her sidearm. "Torres, call in air support!"
"Comms are jammed!" Torres yelled back, pulling a smoke grenade from his vest. "They brought a signal scrambler!"
From the Snocat fifty yards away, Emily watched in absolute horror as gunfire lit up the cabin. Dani screamed, hiding her face in Emily's lap.
"Stay down, baby! Stay down!" Emily cried out, her heart pounding with raw, maternal fury. She looked at the Snocat driver—a young marshal named Deputy Miller. "We have to do something!"
"I have my orders, ma'am—keep you safe in the vehicle!" Miller said, drawing his sidearm.
"They're jamming your radios!" Emily realized, pointing to the flickering tactical screen on the dashboard. "If you don't drive this armored vehicle up to that cabin door to give them cover, they're going to get slaughtered!"
Deputy Miller looked at the cabin, then at Emily's fierce, unwavering eyes. He made a split-second decision. "Hold on tight!"
Miller threw the heavy Snocat into gear, roared the engine, and plowed the massive tracked vehicle directly into the clearing, positioning the heavy armored side of the vehicle directly in front of the cabin porch, blocking the sniper's line of sight.
"Torres! Ramsey! Get in!" Miller bellowed, popping the side armored door open.
Torres and Ramsey laid down a barrage of suppressive fire as Brian sprinted out of the cabin, holding the drive tightly. He threw himself into the back of the Snocat, followed instantly by Torres and Ramsey.
"GO! GO! GO!" Torres roared.
Miller slammed his foot on the accelerator, turning the heavy vehicle around and crashing back into the dense pine forest, leaving the mercenary team behind in the blinding snowstorm.
Inside the rear compartment, Brian collapsed onto the floor, gasping for air, covered in snow and wood splinters. Emily immediately dropped to her knees beside him, grabbing his jacket collars.
"Are you hit? Are you hurt?" she demanded frantically, checking his chest and arms.
"I'm okay," Brian gasped, looking up into her eyes, his breathing ragged. "I'm okay, Em. I've got the drive."
Dani looked up from the bench, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. She looked at her father, who was panting on the floor. "Dad... you came back out."
Brian crawled over to his daughter, reaching out with trembling, gloved hands to gently stroke her face. "I told you, Peanut. I'm never leaving you again. No matter what."
May you like
Dani looked at him for a long, quiet moment. Then, for the first time in three years, she threw her small arms around Brian's neck and sobbed tightly into his shoulder.
Brian closed his eyes, holding his daughter against his chest, tears spilling freely down his face, washing away three years of exile and grief in the quiet, hum of the motor.
