Chapter 9 - Echoes of Alaska

Brian stood frozen in the center of the command room, the bright fluorescent lights reflecting off his pale face. The room went dead quiet as Deputy Torres, Deputy Ramsey, and Emily all stared at him.
"Brian?" Emily whispered, her voice trembling. "What did you hide?"
Brian took a slow, agonizing breath, dragging his hand over his face. "Three years ago... before I drove that snowmobile into the mountains... I knew my life was in danger. I knew the local authorities in Anchorage were corrupt."
"You told the grand jury you turned over all financial evidence," Torres said, his tone dropping into a dangerous register.
"I turned over the main accounting ledgers," Brian admitted, looking Torres in the eye. "That was enough to indict Victor Vance and the core leadership. But there was one piece of evidence I didn't give anyone. Not even the FBI."
"Why?" Ramsey demanded. "Harper, keeping evidence in a federal investigation is a serious felony!"
"Because it wasn't just accounting data!" Brian yelled back, his emotions finally overflowing. "It was the master offshore key code! It contained the access passcodes to three private bank vaults in Zurich containing over two hundred million dollars in cartel slush funds. And more importantly... it contained a digital ledger of every corrupt politician, judge, and law enforcement officer on Apex Logistics' payroll across five states!"
Emily gasped, clutching her chest. "Brian... you kept that?"
"I hid it as an insurance policy!" Brian said, looking at Emily with desperate eyes. "I thought if the cartel ever captured me, or if the federal protection failed, that drive was the only leverage I had to buy your freedom and Dani's freedom! I buried it in Alaska before I got on that snowmobile!"
"Where is it now?" Torres asked grimly.
"It's hidden in a sealed waterproof casing inside an old lockbox... buried beneath the floorboards of a disused fishing cabin twelve miles north of Talkeetna, Alaska," Brian confessed. "Only I know the exact GPS coordinates."
On the tactical monitor, the U.S. Marshals Director leaned forward. "Julian Vance knew about that drive. His father told him about it from prison. That's why Julian compromised Marla Kline's firm—he didn't just want revenge; he wanted those passcodes to reclaim the two hundred million dollars and flee the country."
"And now that Julian Vance is in custody," Ramsey realized, "his remaining cartel enforcers know the clock is ticking. They know Brian is the only key to that fortune."
"Director," Torres said into the monitor. "We need to retrieve that drive before cartel elements in Alaska locate that cabin."
"Agreed," the Director said. "Deputies Torres and Ramsey, you will escort Brian Harper to Alaska on a military transport departing Homestead Air Force Base in two hours. Secure the evidence."
Emily stepped forward, placing herself firmly between Brian and the federal officers. "No. Absolutely not."
"Mrs. Harper—" Torres began.
"No!" Emily shouted, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "You are not taking him away again! You kept us apart for three years! If he goes to Alaska to finish this, Dani and I are going with him under full federal protection, or nobody moves!"

"Emily, it's too dangerous—" Brian began, but she cut him off with a look that left no room for argument.
"We survive together now, Brian," Emily said, her voice steady as rock. "No more hiding. No more separate paths. We finish this as a family."
