Chapter 8 - A Cracked Citadel

"Hang on!" Deputy Ramsey yelled, wrestling with the steering wheel as the heavy armored SUV stabilized on the asphalt road.
Behind them, the dark pickup truck rammed the rear bumper again, attempting to pit-maneuver the government vehicle into the deep, alligator-infested canals lining both sides of the highway.
Deputy Torres lowered his side window three inches, leveled his tactical rifle through the gap, and fired three precise shots into the lead truck's front left tire.
The truck's tire blew with a loud explosion. The vehicle veered wildly off the road, flipping twice before slamming into the muddy swamp ditch with a massive splash.
However, the second chasing vehicle—a sleek black SUV—swerved around the wreck and continued the pursuit, its passenger window rolling down as a gunman leaned out holding an automatic weapon.
"Get down!" Brian roared, covering Emily and Dani completely as bullets rattled against the armored glass of their SUV like hail.
"Armored glass holding!" Ramsey reported, flooring the accelerator. "Staging site entrance is two miles ahead!"
Ramsey executed a sharp, handbrake-assisted turn onto an unmarked gravel road cutting through heavy cypress trees. The SUV smashed through a heavy wooden barrier gate marked *U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY - NO TRESPASSING*.
Ahead stood the staging site: a low, concrete bunker-style compound surrounded by twelve-foot chain-link fencing topped with razor wire and flooded with high-intensity halogen floodlights.
Four heavily armed federal marshals in full tactical gear emerged from the bunker, weapons raised.
Ramsey skidded the SUV to a halt inside the compound gates. The gate automatically slammed shut behind them just as the pursuing black SUV screeched to a stop outside the fence line. Seeing the armed federal garrison, the pursuing vehicle reversed rapidly and sped away into the dark Everglades night.
"Clear! All clear!" tactical officers shouted, rushing to open the SUV doors.
Brian helped Emily and Dani out of the vehicle. Emily’s legs were shaking uncontrollably, but she kept a firm hold on Dani, who was crying quietly into her sweater.
"Everyone inside, now!" Torres ordered, escorting them into the fortified concrete bunker.
Inside, the compound was equipped with satellite communications, tactical monitors, and reinforced steel doors. Deputy Ramsey immediately approached the command console and established a secure video feed with the U.S. Marshals headquarters in Washington, D.C.
"Director," Ramsey reported, her face flushed with adrenaline. "We were intercepted en route to the staging site. Two vehicles. We neutralized one; the second fled. The Harper family is secured inside Compound Bravo."
On the monitor, the Deputy Director of the Marshals Service looked grim. "Deputy Ramsey, we have a major breach. Julian Vance was arrested twenty minutes ago at his apartment in Chicago. But during his arrest, federal agents recovered encrypted flash drives."
Brian stepped closer to the screen. "What was on the drives?"
May you like
The Director looked directly at Brian. "Julian Vance didn't just want to eliminate you for testifying against his father, Brian. He was looking for something specific that you took from Apex Logistics three years ago. Something he claims you hid before your accident in Alaska."
Emily turned to look at her husband, her eyes filled with fresh shock. "Brian... what is he talking about?"
