Chapter 15 - Unmasking the Puppeteer

Winter arrived in Chicago, covering the city in a blanket of clean white snow. Christmas was approaching—their first Christmas together in four years.

In early December, the final legal hurdles were cleared when the federal government officially closed the investigation into Apex Logistics. All seized assets had been processed, and the trial phase was fully concluded.

On a snow-dusted Saturday afternoon, Brian, Emily, and Dani visited the Lincoln Park Zoo to see the holiday light displays. Millions of small blue and gold lights illuminated the trees and walkways.

Dani ran ahead, holding a glowing paper lantern, her laughter echoing in the crisp winter air.

Brian walked beside Emily, his arm wrapped comfortably around her waist under her winter coat. They stopped near the frozen pond, watching the reflections of the lights on the ice.

"I got a letter from Deputy Torres yesterday," Brian mentioned quietly.

Emily looked up at him. "What did he say?"

"He said his detail was officially closed," Brian said. "He's being reassigned to a new field office in Denver. He told me to live a long, boring, uneventful life."

Emily laughed softly, leaning her head against Brian's shoulder. "A boring life sounds like absolute paradise right now."

"I agree," Brian said, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a small, square velvet box.

Emily froze, her heart skipping a beat. "Brian... what is that?"

Brian stopped walking and turned to face her in the soft glow of the blue zoo lights. He opened the velvet box. Inside lay her original diamond wedding ring—the ring she had placed in a safe-deposit box three years ago when she thought he was dead.

"Marla retrieved it from your vault yesterday with your permission," Brian said, his voice trembling with emotion. "Emily, three years ago, our marriage was severed by violence and lies. I don't want us to just patch up the old marriage. I want to make new promises to you."

Tears welled up in Emily's eyes, sparkling in the holiday lights.

"Emily Harper," Brian said, looking deep into her eyes with absolute devotion. "Will you marry me again? Will you let me be your husband, your partner, and your protector for the rest of our lives?"

Emily didn't hesitate for a single second. "Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with joy. "Yes, Brian! A thousand times yes!"

Brian slipped the ring back onto her left ring finger where it belonged. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her slightly off the snow as he kissed her deeply under the canopy of glowing lights.

Dani came running back, seeing them hugging. "Are we getting married again?!" she squealed excitedly.

Brian dropped to his knees, pulling Dani into the hug with Emily. "We are all getting married again, Peanut! A big wedding!"

"Can I be the flower girl?" Dani asked, jumping up and down in the snow.

"You're going to be the main flower girl," Emily promised, laughing through her tears.
