Chapter 14 - The Standoff

That Friday evening, Brian arrived at Emily’s condo door at precisely 6:59 PM, holding a bouquet of deep yellow sunflowers—Emily's absolute favorite. He wore a crisp navy blotted button-down shirt and dark trousers, his hair freshly cut.
Emily opened the door wearing a dark green dress that accentuating her hazel eyes. When Brian saw her, he froze for a second, breathing in gently.
"You look... incredible, Emily," Brian said, handing her the flowers.
"You don't look too bad yourself," Emily replied, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Dani ran out from the kitchen, wearing her pajamas, babysitter Rosa trailing behind her. "Mom looks like a princess! Dad, take a picture!"
Brian pulled out his phone—a new, normal civilian smartphone—and snapped a picture of Emily and Dani smiling together. For the first time in three years, the photo didn't feel like evidence or a security risk. It felt like a memory.
They had dinner at a small, candlelit Italian bistro in Old Town. They talked about simple, mundane things: Brian's new job offer as a chief compliance officer for an environmental firm, Emily's recent promotion at her graphic design agency, and Dani's obsession with her new school science project.
"It's strange," Emily remarked over dessert, looking at the flickering candle between them. "For three years, my life felt like a paused movie. Everything was gray and quiet. And now... everything feels vivid again."
"I felt the same way," Brian agreed softly, reaching across the table to take her hand. "In those safehouses, time didn't exist. I was just surviving until the next sunrise. Being here with you... it feels like starting to breathe again after being underwater."
As they walked back to Emily's apartment building under the cool Chicago night sky, the streetlights cast long, warm shadows on the pavement. They walked hand-in-hand, their fingers intertwined naturally, the old rhythm of their twelve-year relationship returning without effort.
When they reached her front doorway, Brian stopped, turning to face her. "Thank you for giving me a chance, Em."
Emily looked up into his dark brown eyes, seeing the man she had loved since college, stripped of secrecy and fear, standing before her with absolute vulnerability.
She leaned up on her toes and kissed him gently on the lips.
It wasn't a tentative kiss; it was warm, deep, and filled with years of unspoken longing. Brian wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, holding her as if grounding himself in reality.
When they parted, both of them were breathless.
"Does this mean the date went well?" Brian asked, a crooked smile playing on his lips.
"It went very well," Emily whispered, smoothing his collar. "Do you want to come upstairs for coffee?"
Brian smiled softly, kissing her forehead. "More than anything in the world. But not tonight."
Emily blinked, surprised. "No?"
"Tonight was perfect," Brian explained gently, kissing her cheek. "I want to do this right, Em. I want to win you back day by day, step by step. I'm not rushing anything ever again."
