Chapter 12 - The Reckoning in the Dark

The gunshot boomed through the high-ceilinged mansion like a cannon blast. The bullet zipped past Mark’s ear, embedding itself into the wooden doorframe behind him.

Mark collided with Sterling with the force of a freight train. Both men went flying over the stair banister, crashing onto the hardwood floor below. The pistol flew from Sterling's hand, sliding across the dark floor toward the kitchen.

Julian Thorne scrambled across the rug, diving for the fallen gun. "Get it, Julian!" Sterling screamed, clutching his chest where Mark’s shoulder had slammed into him.

Before Julian’s fingers could close around the grip, a small red-and-blue object came flying through the air.

It was Toby’s heavy wooden toy truck, thrown with all the strength a terrified four-year-old could muster. The toy struck Julian squarely in the eye, making the doctor shriek in pain and pull his hand back.

That fraction of a second was all Mark needed.

Mark rolled across the floor, scooped up the pistol, and racked the slide. He stood up, pointing the weapon straight at Julian’s head.

"Don't move," Mark growled, his breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps. "Don't even breathe."

Julian froze on his knees, holding his bleeding eye, his hands trembling in the air.

Beside him, Sterling tried to scramble toward the broken plywood patio door, but Mark fired a warning shot that shattered the floorboards an inch from Sterling’s knee. Sterling froze instantly, pressing his hands against the floor.

"Hands behind your heads! Both of you!" Mark commanded, his voice shaking the walls.

Outside, sudden red and blue lights began flashing through the trees. Siren wails echoed up the long driveway, cutting through the rain.

Detective Ramirez had ordered an automated check-in when the private security guards failed to answer their radios ten minutes earlier. SWAT trucks and police cruisers screeched to a halt on the front lawn, headlights flooding the dark windows of the estate.

The front doors were kicked open, and heavy tactical boots rushed into the foyer.

"Police! Nobody move!" Ramirez shouted, his tactical flashlight beam sweeping across the room.

He stopped, taking in the scene: Mark standing bruised and bleeding, holding the gun on Julian Thorne and Richard Sterling, while four-year-old Toby stood bravely near the kitchen threshold holding his wooden toy truck.

Mark slowly lowered the pistol, handing it butt-first to Ramirez.

"They're all yours, Detective," Mark said quietly.

Ramirez looked at Sterling, then at Julian, and finally at Mark. "You alright, Vance?"

Mark walked over to the kitchen island, dropped to his knees, and pulled Toby into a tight, warm hug. The boy wrapped his small arms around Mark’s neck, burying his head against his father's chest.

"I'm okay, Detective," Mark whispered, kissing his son's head while tears finally spilled down his cheeks. "We're both okay."
