Chapter 8 - Echoes of the Past

Two weeks after Vanessa’s arrest, the legal storm began to settle into a steady march toward trial. Mark took a leave of absence from Vance Dynamics to spend every waking moment with Toby. Together, they rebuilt a life that had been fractured by deceit—cooking meals, walking through the nearby nature reserve, and reading bedtime stories.
However, a lingering question continued to haunt Mark’s thoughts.
How had Vanessa—a woman he met at a charity gala eighteen months after his first wife Clara died—managed to slide so seamlessly into his life? How had she known exactly what to say, how to act, and how to position herself as the perfect companion?
Sitting in his study late one night while Toby slept upstairs, Mark received an unexpected visit from Thomas Miller, a retired private investigator who had been a close friend of Mark’s late father.
Thomas walked into the study, shaking raindrops from his trench coat, carrying a yellowed accordion folder.
"Mark," Thomas said, setting the folder onto the desk. "You asked me to look into Vanessa’s past before she met you. I think you need to sit down."
Mark frowned, opening the folder. Inside were old police reports, newspaper clippings, and financial records dating back seven years.
"Her real name isn't Vanessa Sterling or Vanessa Vance," Thomas explained, pointing at a photograph of a younger Vanessa with dark dyed hair. "Her birth name is Vanessa Thorne. Seven years ago in Denver, she was married to a mid-level real estate developer named Gregory Hall."
Mark skimmed the police report. "Gregory Hall... died of an accidental prescription overdose in 2019?"
"That was the official ruling," Thomas said grimly. "Two weeks before Gregory died, he took out a two-million-dollar life insurance policy naming Vanessa as the sole beneficiary. Six months after his death, the money was gone, liquidated into offshore accounts."
Mark felt a sudden, icy chill spread through his gut. "Are you saying she killed him?"
"There wasn't enough physical evidence to charge her back then," Thomas replied. "But look at the medical examiner's report from Gregory’s case. The doctor who signed off on the accidental toxicity ruling was a local private consultant."
Mark looked at the signature at the bottom of the page. His eyes narrowed in shock.
*Dr. Julian Thorne.*
"Thorne?" Mark looked up. "Is he related to her?"
"Her biological uncle," Thomas confirmed. "And three years ago, right before Vanessa moved to Oakridge and conveniently bumped into you at that charity gala, Julian Thorne moved his medical practice here as well."
Mark stood up from his desk, his fists trembling. "Clara..." Mark whispered, his heart stopping. "Clara died of sudden cardiac arrest during her final cancer remission treatment..."
"I checked Clara's medical files from the hospital," Thomas said softly, his voice heavy with caution. "Julian Thorne was one of the consulting anesthesiologists assigned to her ward during her final week."
Mark felt the room tilt around him. The air seemed to leave his lungs. The woman he had brought into his home, the woman he had allowed around his motherless son, hadn't just targeted his wealth. She was a professional predator whose entire life was built on calculated destruction.
"We need to exhume Clara's records," Mark said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "We need to re-examine everything."

Thomas laid a hand on Mark’s arm. "Be careful, Mark. If Vanessa and her uncle realize we are digging into Clara’s death, they won't just fight this in court. They will become desperate."
Mark looked toward the stairs leading to Toby’s bedroom. "Let them try," he said, his eyes filled with a fierce, unwavering fire. "I will burn their entire world to ashes."
