Chapter 4 - A Web of Shadows

By eleven o'clock the following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, sunny autumn sky that felt completely out of place against the ruin of Mark’s life. After discharging Toby from the hospital under strict instructions for bed rest, Mark drove him straight to his sister Sarah’s house in the quiet countryside outside Oakridge.

Sarah, a sharp corporate attorney who had never trusted Vanessa from the day Mark brought her home, wrapped Toby in a warm bear hug as soon as they walked through the door.

"He’s going to be okay, Mark," Sarah said softly, placing a cup of hot coffee in Mark’s hands while Toby played with wooden blocks on the rug. "I’ve locked down the house security. Nobody comes near him without going through me."

Mark sat at the kitchen counter, staring at his phone. Social media was already exploding. Headline after headline from local tabloids flashed across his screen:

*TECH EXECUTIVE MARK VANCE CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC ASSAULT AFTER violent BREAK-IN!*

*EXCLUSIVE: STEPMOTHER VANESSA VANCE CLAIMS TERROR IN OAKRIDGE MANSION!*

"She’s moving fast," Mark said, rubbing his tired eyes. "Sterling is trying to destroy my credibility before the grand jury even hears the evidence."

Sarah sat across from him, opening her laptop. "Sterling is a circus manager, Mark. He wins in the press because he can't win in a clean courtroom. But we aren't going to fight him in the press. We’re going to hit him where it hurts: the facts."

She flipped her screen toward Mark. "I did a deep dive into the financial records of Vance Dynamics last night—the shared accounts you gave Vanessa access to six months ago."

Mark frowned. "What did you find?"

"Over the past ninety days, Vanessa transferred nearly four hundred thousand dollars out of your family trust into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called 'Aura Holdings,'" Sarah explained, pointing at line items on a spreadsheet. "And guess who the registered agent for Aura Holdings is?"

"Chad Harrison," Mark gritted out.

"Exactly," Sarah said. "This wasn't just an affair, Mark. Vanessa and Chad were systematically draining your personal accounts and preparing to flee the country. Locking Toby out wasn't an accident—it was part of a pattern of negligence while she was busy organizing wire transfers."

Mark leaned back, his eyes narrowing. "She knew I wasn't supposed to return until Friday. If I hadn't taken an earlier flight because of the storm, Toby would have been left out there for hours while she finalized whatever transfer they had planned for that night."

"It’s worse than that," Sarah added quietly. "I spoke with a private investigator I hire for corporate cases. He tracked Chad’s recent communications. Chad bought two one-way tickets to Zurich for this coming Sunday."

A cold shudder ran down Mark’s spine. Vanessa wasn't just planning to divorce him; she was planning to abandon Toby entirely, leaving Mark penniless and ruined in her wake.

Suddenly, Mark’s phone buzzed on the counter. An unknown number flashed on the screen. He tapped the speaker button.

"Mark," a smooth, cultured voice spoke through the speaker. It was Richard Sterling, Vanessa’s defense attorney.

"Sterling," Mark said coldly. "You have nerve calling me directly."

"I’m calling as a courtesy to spare you further embarrassment, Mr. Vance," Sterling replied smoothly. "My client is prepared to make a deal. She will agree not to press criminal assault charges regarding your violent entry last night, provided you execute a full, uncontested divorce settlement handing over the Crestview estate and fifty percent of your shares in Vance Dynamics."

Mark let out a harsh laugh. "Are you insane? Your client locked a toddler in a storm while embezzling my life savings with her lover."

"Allegations, Mr. Vance," Sterling said with a light chuckle. "Hard to prove in court. Whereas the shattered glass, Mr. Harrison's bruised jaw, and Mrs. Vance's tearful testimony on local news tonight are very real. A jury in this town will see a wealthy, absentee father who lost his temper and attacked his wife."

"Listen to me carefully, Sterling," Mark said, leaning over the phone, his voice dropping to an icy tone that made even Sarah sit up straight. "Tell Vanessa that every cent she stole will be returned. Tell her that if she ever comes within five hundred yards of my son again, I will personally see to it that she spends the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary. We are going to trial."

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the table.

Sarah looked at her brother, a grim smile on her face. "Good. Now let's go assemble our war room."
