Chapter 9 - The Dark Network

The revelations about Vanessa’s past shifted the nature of Mark’s battle from a bitter divorce into a dangerous criminal investigation. Early the next morning, Mark and his attorney Marcus Kane met privately with District Attorney Laura Chen and Lead Detective Ramirez at the state prosecutor's office.

When Marcus laid out the file compiled by Thomas Miller regarding Gregory Hall's death and Dr. Julian Thorne's involvement, the atmosphere in the conference room grew heavy.

Laura Chen reviewed the autopsy signatures, her expression growing darker with every page. "If Dr. Thorne falsified medical reports in Denver to cover up a murder-for-insurance scheme, and then resurfaced here during your first wife's illness..." She looked up at Mark. "This isn't just opportunistic theft. This is syndicate-level homicide."

"I want Clara’s medical records impounded immediately," Mark said, his knuckles white against the conference table. "And I want Julian Thorne under twenty-four-hour surveillance. If he realizes we’re connecting the dots, he’ll run."

"He won't get far," Ramirez said, standing up. "I’m issuing a warrant to audit Thorne’s medical clinic today. If there are discrepancies in his pharmaceutical logs—especially sedatives or cardiac arrest medication—we’ll have him in cuffs by nightfall."

Meanwhile, inside the County Women's Detention Center, Vanessa sat in a cold visitation cell, staring across a glass partition at her uncle, Dr. Julian Thorne.

Julian was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, dressed in a sharp wool coat, though his eyes darted nervously around the room.

"You ruined everything, Vanessa!" Julian hissed softly through the phone intercom. "You were supposed to wait until the offshore accounts cleared! Why did you lock the boy outside?!"

"He was crying! He wouldn't shut up!" Vanessa spat back, her eyes hollow and bloodshot. "I didn't know Mark was coming home early! The flight was supposed to be grounded!"

"It doesn't matter now," Julian said, leaning closer to the glass. "Mark's private investigator was at the county coroner's office this morning asking for Clara’s archived toxicology files."

Vanessa’s breath hitched. "What? How could he know?"

"He’s digging into Denver," Julian whispered grimly. "If they test the preserved tissue samples from Clara's post-mortem hold, they will find traces of potassium chloride. I told you we should have opted for cremation!"

"You said the hospital would discard those samples after two years!" Vanessa panicked, clutching the receiver.

"They were supposed to! But Mark funded a research grant at that hospital—they kept all oncology files for long-term study!" Julian took a deep breath, his hands shaking slightly. "If that evidence comes out, we are both looking at life sentences without parole, or worse."

"What do we do?" Vanessa whimpered, tears of fear welling in her eyes.

Julian’s eyes hardened into cold glass. "Mark is the only one driving this investigation. Without his testimony and his relentless pressure on the DA, the prosecutors will focus solely on the financial fraud."

"What are you suggesting?"

"I still have access to the house security override codes you gave me," Julian said quietly. "Mark thinks he's safe now that you're in here. He’s taking the boy back to the Crestview house tonight to collect their clothes before moving permanently."

Vanessa’s voice trembled. "Julian... no. You can't."

"It's either him, Vanessa... or us," Julian said, hanging up the phone and turning away from the glass.
