Chapter 15 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Spring arrived in Oakridge six months later, bringing with it blooming dogwood trees, warm breezes, and green grass.
The Crestview estate had been sold, its proceeds donated entirely to the Clara Vance Foundation for Pediatric Health and Child Safety—a charity Mark had established to help vulnerable children and fund child protective services in the region.
Mark and Toby had moved into a beautiful, sunlit craftsman house located on a quiet two-acre lot near a lake. The home featured warm wood floors, big open windows, and a large backyard with an oak tree where Mark had built a wooden treehouse with a red slide.
On a sunny Saturday morning, Mark stood in the backyard holding a paintbrush, adding the final coat of blue paint to the treehouse railings.
Down on the grass, Toby was running around in a brand-new, comfortable superhero cape, laughing as he chased a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby—a gift Mark had surprised him with for his fifth birthday.
Sarah stepped out onto the back deck, carrying a tray with lemonade and fresh sandwiches.
"You look like a professional carpenter now, Mark," she laughed, setting the tray on the patio table.
Mark climbed down the wooden ladder, wiping paint from his forearm with a towel. "It’s honest work," he smiled, looking over at Toby who was wrestling playfully with the puppy in the grass. "And it keeps my mind clear."
"How is he doing?" Sarah asked softly, looking at her nephew. "With the night terrors?"
Mark’s smile widened with genuine peace. "He hasn't had a single nightmare in three months. Dr. Evans says his emotional recovery is remarkable. He knows he’s safe here."
Suddenly, a blue sedan pulled up into the driveway. Out stepped Elena Rostova—a bright, warm-hearted child psychologist who had worked closely with Toby during his recovery over the past few months. Over the course of the home visits and sessions, Elena’s gentle strength and kindness had drawn both Toby and Mark toward her.
"Dr. Elena!" Toby shouted happily, leaving the puppy behind as he sprinted across the lawn, his cape flying behind him.
Elena crouched down, opening her arms as Toby gave her a big hug. "Happy Saturday, Superhero!" she smiled, patting his head before standing up to greet Mark.
Mark walked over, his eyes softening as he met Elena's gaze. "Hey, Elena. You're just in time for lunch."
"I brought apple pie," Elena said, holding up a small baker's box with a warm grin. "I hope I'm not intruding."
"You're never intruding here," Mark said softly, stepping aside to welcome her into the yard.

As they sat around the patio table under the warm afternoon sun, listening to Toby’s joyful laughter ringing through the trees, Mark felt a profound sense of stillness wash over his soul. The cold rain, the shattered glass, and the dark betrayals were finally far behind them.
In their place was a future built on truth, protection, and an unbreakable love.
