Chapter 3 - The Cold Reality

The emergency room of St. Jude Children’s Hospital smelled of antiseptic and ozone. Overhead fluorescent lights flickered softly, throwing pale reflections onto the linoleum floor. Mark sat on a plastic chair beside a hospital bed, holding Toby’s small hand. The boy was wrapped in heated thermal blankets, a heart monitor beep-beeping rhythmically in the quiet room. An IV line was taped to the back of his tiny hand, feeding warm saline into his system.
Dr. Aris Thorne, a senior pediatrician with graying temples and sharp, compassionate eyes, walked into the room carrying a clipboard. He checked the monitor before turning to Mark.
"His core body temperature has stabilized at ninety-seven point eight," Dr. Thorne said quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the sleeping boy. "When he arrived, it was hovering just above ninety-two. Another thirty minutes in that rain, Mr. Vance, and his organs would have started shutting down."
Mark closed his eyes, squeezing Toby’s hand gently. The guilt was a heavy physical weight crushing his chest. "How could I not have seen it?" Mark muttered, his voice raspy. "I was away on business trips... I thought she was taking care of him."
Dr. Thorne laid a reassuring hand on Mark’s shoulder. "Child abuse and neglect often hide behind closed doors, especially when committed by someone skilled at manipulation. But you need to know something else, Mr. Vance. We conducted a full physical examination while warming him up."
Mark looked up, his jaw clenching. "What did you find?"
Dr. Thorne flipped a page on his clipboard. "Toby has several older bruises along his upper arms and shoulder blades. They are in various stages of healing—some two weeks old, some a month old. They match the pattern of firm, forceful grabs. Additionally, his mild weight deficiency suggests he hasn't been receiving proper nutrition over the past few months."
A cold rage burned through Mark’s veins. Vanessa hadn't just neglected Toby tonight during an opportunistic affair; she had been systematically mistreating his son while he was working eighty-hour weeks to provide for their family.
"I’ve already filed a mandatory report with Child Protective Services," Dr. Thorne continued. "The police officers who met you at the house have taken photos of the scene and the broken glass. Officer Ramirez is waiting outside in the hallway to speak with you."
Mark stood up, stepping softly away from the bed. "Thank you, Doctor. Please... watch him."
"He’s safe here, Mr. Vance. Take all the time you need."
Mark opened the heavy door and stepped into the corridor. Waiting near the nurse's station was Officer Ramirez, a seasoned detective with a stern face and a thick notepad in hand.
"Mr. Vance," Ramirez said, offering a firm handshake. "I just got off the phone with the unit at your residence. Your wife—or rather, Mrs. Vanessa Vance—was still on the premises when patrol units arrived. She claimed you physically assaulted her and her guest, Mr. Harrison, and that you broke into the home in a violent rage."
Mark let out a bitter laugh. "She locked a four-year-old child out on a glass patio in a severe thunderstorm while she was in the master bedroom with another man. I broke the glass door because it was locked and my son was freezing to death."
"We found the glass shards," Ramirez replied, nodding. "We also documented the locked security bar on the sliding track, the wet superhero suit on the patio floor, and the stereo set to eighty decibels inside the living room. Furthermore, Mr. Harrison made a preliminary statement at the scene before leaving with his attorney."
Mark raised an eyebrow. "Chad spoke?"
"He was frightened," Ramirez said with a slight smirk. "When we mentioned that locking a minor outside in life-threatening weather carries felony child endangerment charges, Mr. Harrison was very quick to clarify that he had no idea the child was outside, and that Vanessa explicitly told him your son was staying overnight at his grandmother's house."
Mark sneered. "Chad is a coward, but he’s right about one thing: Vanessa planned this."
"We have taken Mrs. Vance into custody for questioning," Ramirez said. "However, I must warn you, Mr. Vance. She has already retained high-profile legal representation. Her lawyer, Richard Sterling, is claiming that you staged the scene to frame her after catching her in an extramarital affair."
Mark’s fists clenched. "Framed her? My son almost died of hypothermia!"
"I know, Mr. Vance. The medical records from tonight will be crucial," Ramirez said calmly. "But Sterling is dirty and aggressive. He’s already leaking stories to local media outlets, portraying you as an unstable, violent husband trying to steal full custody of a high-value estate."

Mark looked back through the window of the hospital room at his sleeping son. Toby looked so small under the white hospital blankets. Mark thought of his late wife, Clara, who had passed away from cancer when Toby was just an infant. On her deathbed, Mark had sworn to protect their boy with his life. He had failed by letting Vanessa into their world. He would not fail again.
"Let Sterling leak whatever he wants," Mark said, his voice deadly quiet. "I don't care about the estate, the money, or my reputation. I am going to tear down every single lie she has ever told."
