Chapter 4 - A Dangerous Proposition

The silence in the penthouse office stretched out, thick and suffocating, broken only by the distant hum of city traffic far below.
Antoine steepled his fingers, studying Ethan with an unreadable expression that made the younger man squirm in his seat.
'You think life is a game of optics, Ethan,' Antoine began, his voice calm yet commanding. 'You think flashing a rented jacket or leaning against someone else's car makes you powerful.'
'I made a mistake, okay?' Ethan snapped defensively, though his voice cracked under the pressure. 'Just tell me how to pay you off. Do you want a payment plan?'
Antoine let out a low, humorless chuckle. 'Ten thousand dollars is pocket lint to me, Ethan. I don't care about the money.'
'Then why did you make the bet?' Ethan demanded, frustration bleeding through his fear.
'Because people like you need a reality check,' Antoine said sharply, leaning forward. 'You live in a fantasy world. But unlike most people, I am willing to offer you an alternative.'
Ethan narrowed his eyes suspiciously. 'What kind of alternative?'
'An internship,' Antoine stated bluntly. 'Starting at the absolute bottom. No luxury cars, no shortcuts, no lying to your friends. You work forty hours a week at our warehouse logistics division for three months. If you survive, the debt is wiped clean.'
Ethan stared at him in utter disbelief. 'Work in a warehouse? Are you insane? I have an image to maintain!'
'What image?' Sarah interjected sharply from the corner of the room, crossing her arms. 'The image of a broke fraudster hiding behind a blocked Instagram account? Your image is already dead, Ethan.'
Ethan's jaw tightened in anger and humiliation. Every word they spoke was an undeniable truth that he desperately wanted to deny.
'If I refuse?' Ethan asked through clenched teeth.
'Then I take legal action for public fraud, breach of contract on our parking lot wager, and file formal complaints that will ensure you never get hired anywhere in this city,' Antoine replied smoothly.
The threat was absolute. Antoine held all the cards, and Ethan was entirely at his mercy.
'Fine,' Ethan whispered bitterly, hating every second of it. 'When do I start?'
'Tomorrow morning at six sharp,' Antoine said, standing up to dismiss him. 'Don't be late. And wear clothes that can get dirty.'
As Ethan stumbled out of the skyscraper into the glaring afternoon light, he realized his descent into hell had only just begun.

Little did he know, the warehouse division wasn't just a punishment; it was the training ground for something far more sinister that Antoine was orchestrating.
Deep within the corporate hierarchy of Sterling Technologies, hidden agendas were swirling, and Ethan was about to become an unwitting pawn in a high-stakes corporate war.
