Chapter 5 - The Warehouse Floor

The air inside the Sterling Technologies distribution hub was thick with the scent of cardboard, diesel exhaust, and industrial dust.

At exactly six o'clock in the morning, Ethan stood shivering in a cheap high-visibility vest and steel-toed boots that pinched his feet.

Marcus, a grizzled warehouse floor manager with a scarred forearm and a permanent scowl, towered over him.

'Listen up, pretty boy,' Marcus barked, clapping a heavy hand onto Ethan's shoulder with bone-crushing force. 'Out here, your designer jackets don't mean a damn thing. You lift boxes, you scan barcodes, and you keep your mouth shut.'

Ethan bit his tongue, nodding obediently as he hauled his first heavy crate of electrical components onto a wooden pallet.

His back screamed in protest within the first twenty minutes. Blisters formed rapidly on his unaccustomed hands, breaking open and stinging with sweat.

Around him, dozens of blue-collar workers moved with relentless efficiency, paying him zero attention and treating him like just another temporary grunt.

By noon, Ethan was sweating profusely, covered in grime, and nursing a throbbing headache as he ate a dry turkey sandwich on a wooden crate.

During the lunch break, a friendly young worker named Leo sat down next to him, tossing him a bottle of cold water.

'Rough first day, huh?' Leo asked with a sympathetic grin.

'You have no idea,' Ethan groaned, wiping his forehead with the back of a dirty sleeve. 'Why does Antoine make people go through this?'

Leo shrugged, taking a bite of his apple. 'Nobody really knows much about Antoine Sterling. Word is, he built this entire company from the ground up after losing everything. He hates phonies more than anything.'

Ethan stared down at his scarred palms, a bitter mixture of shame and burning resentment twisting inside his chest.

'He humiliated me on purpose,' Ethan muttered darkly.

'Or maybe he's testing to see if there's anything real underneath all that fake armor,' Leo replied wisely before standing up as the whistle blew.

As the afternoon shift ground on, Ethan's muscles turned to lead, but something unexpected began to shift inside his mind.

For the first time in his twenty-two years of life, he was earning his keep through physical exertion rather than empty boasting.

When the shift finally ended at four o'clock, Ethan could barely walk to his dented sedan, his body aching in every conceivable place.

He drove home in total silence, staring at his reflection in the rearview mirror-he didn't look like a glamorous influencer anymore; he looked like a survivor.

Little did Ethan know, his performance on the warehouse floor was being monitored via security feeds directly by Antoine himself.
