Chapter 13 - Cross-Examination Collapse

The following morning, the courtroom was charged with an even more volatile energy. It was time for the defense to cross-examine the prosecution's star witness—me.
Lead defense attorney Marcus Sterling Jr.—a notoriously aggressive litigator known for tearing witnesses apart on the stand—stepped up to the podium, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a theatrical flourish. He turned toward me with a condescending, predatory smile.
"Good morning, Mrs. Mercer," Sterling began smoothly, his baritone ringing through the room. "Let’s talk about your marriage to Ryan Mercer. Isn't it true that your marriage was rocky from the very beginning, and that you felt financially marginalized by a wealthy, prominent family that never truly accepted your working-class background?"
I met his gaze without blinking. "My marriage had its challenges, Mr. Sterling, but my testimony is based entirely on forensic accounting data, not marital grievances."
"Is it? Let's check that assertion," Sterling snapped, pacing back and forth before the jury box like a theater actor. "You claim you were merely an objective forensic auditor protecting public funds. Yet, you lived in a Mercer-owned estate, drove a Mercer-purchased vehicle, and enjoyed the financial benefits of the Mercer family foundation for over three years without ever filing a formal whistleblower complaint until your personal relationship soured! Doesn't that make you a willing participant who only turned informant when your personal interests were threatened?"
A murmur rippled through the gallery. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sinclair started to stand to object, but I raised my hand slightly, signaling that I wanted to answer.
"Mr. Sterling, when you work in forensic accounting, you don't walk into an organization and immediately uncover top-level criminal conspiracies on day one," I spoke calmly, my voice projecting effortlessly across the silent room. "It takes months of digging through thousands of pages of obscure ledger entries, shell company registrations, and falsified invoices to connect the dots. The moment I verified the systematic looting of a children's charity, I confronted my husband with the evidence and demanded self-reporting. When they refused and tried to silence me, I contacted state investigators immediately."
Sterling frowned, realizing his trap had failed to rattle me. He tried a different, more desperate angle.
"Let's discuss the day of the wedding—the day you claim you were wrongfully imprisoned in a bridal suite bathroom," Sterling pressed aggressively. "Isn't it true that you deliberately staged your labor, exaggerating your medical emergency to create a dramatic spectacle that would ruin your sister-in-law's wedding out of sheer spite and jealousy?"
Silence descended upon the courtroom so heavy you could hear the air conditioning hum. Even the jurors stared at Sterling in sheer disbelief at the absurdity of the question.
I let out a cold, sharp laugh that echoed off the mahogany walls. "Mr. Sterling, are you seriously suggesting that I induced my own water to break in the middle of a crowded ceremony, endured agonizing labor contractions on a cold marble floor, and risked the health of my newborn daughter—all as part of an elaborate theatrical plot just to ruin a wedding?"
Sterling hesitated for a fraction of a second, opening his mouth to reply.
"Because if you are," I continued, my voice hardening into pure steel, "then you are just as delusional, arrogant, and morally bankrupt as the clients sitting at your defense table."
Judge Sterling banged his gavel hard, cutting off the defense attorney’s stammering response. "Counsel! Withdraw that absurd line of questioning immediately, or I will hold you in contempt of court!"
Red-faced and sweating, Sterling bowed his head and muttered, "No further questions, Your Honor."

As I stepped down from the witness stand and walked back to my seat beside Detective Maya Torres, a quiet wave of applause broke out in the back of the gallery before the bailiffs quickly hushed the crowd. The defense’s final desperate strategy had completely imploded in front of the entire world.
