Chapter 2 - The Breaching Door

The sirens grew louder, howling through the crisp California air like banshees announcing a reckoning. Inside the locked bridal bathroom, the tiled floor felt freezing against my knees as another heavy contraction wracked my body. I squeezed my eyes shut, gripping the edge of the marble sink so hard my knuckles turned ghostly white.
On the other end of the burner phone, Detective Maya Torres’s voice remained a steady anchor in the storm. "Nora, listen to me. We're breaching the main gates right now. State troopers are securing the perimeter so no one flees with the ledger books. Are you still contracting?"
"Yes... close together..." I gasped, panting through the burning pain. "Hurry, Maya... please..."
Before Maya could answer, heavy, frantic footsteps pounded against the hallway floor outside my door. A frantic fist hammered against the mahogany paneling, followed by Ryan’s voice, cracking with panic.
"Nora! Nora, open the door! Mom lost her mind, she shouldn't have locked you in there—where is the key? Where did Mom put the key?"
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that ended in a sob. "You locked me in, Ryan! You stood right there and watched her do it! You cared more about Vanessa’s Instagram-perfect wedding than your own wife and child!"
"I didn't want—Mom said it was just temporary!" Ryan yelled back, jiggling the brass doorknob frantically. "Just hold on, I'm going to find a maintenance worker, just give me a minute—"
"You don't have a minute, Mr. Mercer! Step away from the door right now! State police!" a booming, authoritative voice echoed through the hallway, drowning out Ryan’s pathetic excuses.
Instantly, chaotic shouts erupted outside. I heard Evelyn Mercer’s shrill, aristocratic voice screeching in protest. "How dare you! Do you know who my family is? Get your hands off my son! This is a private wedding reception, you incompetent thugs!"
"Evelyn Mercer, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and financial conspiracy! Stand back!" Detective Maya Torres’s voice cut through the commotion like a razor blade.
A split second later, a deafening crash reverberated through the bridal suite. Wood splintered, hinges groaned, and the heavy mahogany door burst inward, shattering against the bathroom wall with a violent thud. Dust and wood fragments rained down over the marble floor.
Framed in the shattered doorway stood Detective Maya Torres in a sharp charcoal suit, flanked by two burly state troopers and a pair of emergency medical technicians carrying heavy trauma kits. Behind them, through the ruined frame, I could see the horrified, pale faces of wedding guests peering past velvet drapes.
Maya’s eyes locked onto me slumped against the vanity. In three swift strides, she was kneeling on the cold floor beside me, her expression instantly softening with fierce maternal instinct.
"Nora, you're safe now. We got you," Maya said firmly, turning back to the medical crew. "Move fast! Her water broke, she's in active labor, and these monsters locked her in here! Get the stretcher ready right now!"
As the paramedics swarmed around me with oxygen masks and blood pressure cuffs, I caught a glimpse of the hallway outside. Ryan was pressed against the wallpaper in handcuffs, staring at me with a pathetic, wide-eyed expression of betrayal and shock. Further down the corridor, Evelyn was thrashing wildly in the grip of two troopers, screaming obscenities as the silver cuffs clicked around her manicured wrists.

The flashbulbs of hidden wedding photographers were replaced by the harsh red and blue strobe lights of police cruisers illuminating the crystal chandeliers. As the medics lifted me onto the stretcher, I took one deep, shuddering breath, knowing that the reckoning had only just begun.
