Chapter 4 - The Press Conference of Doom

The television mounted on the hospital room wall blared with the breaking news banner: *MERCER EMPIRE COLLAPSES: MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CHARITY FRAUD SCANDAL ROCKS ELITE SOCIETY*.

I leaned back against my pillows, cradling my newborn daughter in my arms while watching the live broadcast from the state courthouse steps. District Attorney Marcus Vance stood before a forest of microphones, flanked by Detective Maya Torres and a team of federal prosecutors. Flashbulbs strobed continuously, casting stark shadows across their determined faces.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," DA Vance began, his voice echoing authoritatively across the plaza. "Yesterday morning, state and federal law enforcement agencies executed search warrants at the Mercer Foundation and affiliated properties. What our investigators uncovered is not merely financial mismanagement, but a calculated, systemic criminal enterprise operating for over five years under the tax-exempt umbrella of a children’s rehabilitation charity."

Gasps rippled through the gathered pack of journalists and reporters. In the corner of the screen, a graphic displayed the stolen sums: over fourteen million dollars diverted from disabled children to fund luxury real estate, high-end weddings, private jets, and offshore bank accounts.

"The primary architects of this scheme—Evelyn Mercer, Ryan Mercer, and Vanessa Mercer-Vance—have been formally charged with grand larceny, wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy," Vance continued, holding up a thick stack of indictment papers. "Furthermore, investigators have uncovered evidence of witness intimidation and malicious endangerment during yesterday’s operations, perpetrated in a desperate attempt to suppress incriminating financial records."

The camera cut to footage of Evelyn Mercer being led out of the courthouse in handcuffs, her designer silk blouse rumpled, her face twisted in absolute fury as she shrieked obscenities at the camera lens and tried to hide her face behind a legal pad. Next came Ryan, his head bowed low, handcuffed to a burly bailiff, looking every bit the pathetic coward he truly was.

My phone buzzed on the bedside table. It was an unknown number, but caller ID showed a local county jail routing code. I hesitated for a moment before pressing accept.

"Nora? Nora, you have to help me!" Ryan’s frantic, panicked voice sobbed through the speaker. "You're my wife! You can't just let them do this to me! If you talk to the DA and tell them it was all a tragic accounting error, they'll drop the charges against me!"

A cold, heavy calm washed over me. I looked down at my innocent baby girl sleeping peacefully against my chest, then back at the television screen where my mother-in-law was spitting venom at reporters.

"An accounting error, Ryan?" I spoke softly, my voice dripping with icy detachment. "Is that what you call locking your nine-months-pregnant wife in a filthy bathroom so your sister could have an unobstructed walk down the aisle? Is that what you call helping your mother embezzle money from disabled children?"

"I was pressured! Mom forced me! You know how she is!" Ryan whimpered, his voice breaking pathetically. "We can fix this, Nora! We're a family!"

"We were never a family, Ryan. We were a convenience for your mother's ego and your crimes," I replied evenly. "My attorney will be serving you with divorce papers and full custody filing papers by this afternoon. Don't ever call this number again."

I tapped the red end call button, blocking the number permanently. On the television, the press conference concluded with DA Vance promising that no amount of elite status or bloodline would shield criminals from the full weight of the law. I switched off the television, kissed my daughter’s warm forehead, and whispered into the quiet room, "It's just you and me now, little one. And we are going to be just fine."
