Chapter 14 - The Final Verdict

Three days of intense closing arguments culminated on a rainy Friday afternoon. The jury deliberated for a remarkably short period—just under four hours—before sending a sealed verdict note to Judge Arthur Sterling’s chambers.

As the courtroom doors swung open, the tension was so thick it felt almost tangible. Photographers, reporters, and legal observers squeezed onto every available bench. I sat in the front row alongside Detective Maya Torres, holding a small silver locket containing a picture of my baby daughter.

Across the aisle, Evelyn, Ryan, and Vanessa sat rigid and pale. Evelyn’s hands trembled visibly in her lap, while Vanessa stared straight ahead with a mask of frozen denial.

Judge Sterling entered the courtroom, his expression grave and unreadable. He seated himself, adjusted his glasses, and unfolded the white envelope handed to him by the jury foreman.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Sterling asked clearly.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing up.

"Please read the verdicts for the record."

The courtroom held its collective breath. The foreman cleared his throat.

"On Count One through Four—Grand Larceny and Wire Fraud—against Evelyn Mercer: We find the defendant **Guilty**."

A sharp gasp escaped Evelyn’s lips. She gripped the edge of the defense table so hard her knuckles turned white.

"On Count Five through Eight—Money Laundering and International Conspiracy—against Vanessa Mercer-Vance: We find the defendant **Guilty**."

Vanessa let out a sharp cry, burying her face in her hands as her defense attorney placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"On Count Nine through Eleven—Corporate Embezzlement and Obstruction of Justice—against Ryan Mercer: We find the defendant **Guilty** on all counts."

Ryan slumped forward, burying his face in his hands, finally breaking down into quiet, pathetic sobs.

Judge Sterling raised his hand, silencing the erupting murmurs in the gallery with a single authoritative look.

"The jury has spoken with absolute clarity," Judge Sterling announced, his voice ringing through the silent room. "In light of the overwhelming evidence of systemic greed, charity fraud, and malicious witness endangerment, I am revoking all previous conditions. Sentencing will take place in exactly thirty days. Until then, all three defendants are remanded directly to maximum-security federal custody with no possibility of appeal or bond."

Before the defense attorneys could even stand to object, four burly federal marshals stepped forward, snapping heavy steel cuffs around Evelyn, Ryan, and Vanessa’s wrists.

As they were led away through the private side doors in disgrace, Evelyn turned her head one last time, glaring at me with eyes full of pure hatred. But I didn't look away. I met her gaze with calm, unwavering strength.
