Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Richard Vance’s polished corporate composure dissolved in a fraction of a second. He stared from Detective Maya Torres to the two armed state troopers blocking the front doorway, his jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line.
"You recorded our private conversation? That's entrapment! That's a violation of attorney-client privilege!" Richard sputtered, his smooth baritone cracking with sudden panic.
"Privilege only applies to legitimate legal counsel, Mr. Vance, not to active criminal conspiracy and felony witness tampering," Maya replied smoothly, stepping forward and snapping a pair of steel handcuffs around his expensive Italian-tailored wrists with practiced efficiency. "You just walked yourself right into a federal indictment for obstruction of justice and subornation of perjury. Congratulations."
As the troopers escorted a red-faced, furious Richard Vance out of the safe house, Maya turned back to me with an approving grin. "Well played, Nora. You led him right into the trap."
"I didn't plan for him to show up here today, but when he laid out that bribe, I knew he was getting desperate," I replied, exhaling a long breath that I felt like I'd been holding since he walked through the door. "The Mercer legal defense is crumbling faster than they expected."
"It’s not just crumbling; it’s imploding," Maya said, dropping a fresh file folder onto the kitchen island. "With Richard Vance in custody, the prosecution’s case is bulletproof. But that’s not even the best part. Last night, our international financial unit tracked a series of frantic wire transfers originating from Vanessa’s offshore Swiss accounts to a private airstrip in the Bahamas."
My eyes narrowed. "They're trying to flee the country?"
"They were trying to, but federal marshals intercepted their private pilot four hours ago at a hangar in Palm Beach," Maya smiled triumphantly. "Vanessa and her new husband had chartered a Gulfstream jet using hidden corporate funds, planning to skip bail before her arraignment tomorrow morning. Instead, federal agents detained them right on the tarmac."
A profound sense of vindication washed over me. The arrogant, untouchable Mercer family—people who believed their wealth and social standing placed them above every moral and legal boundary—were finally experiencing the cold, unforgiving reality of justice.
"What happens to Ryan now?" I asked quietly, looking toward the nursery where my daughter was sleeping peacefully.
Maya’s expression softened slightly. "Ryan is cooperating with federal prosecutors now that he realizes his mother and sister threw him under the bus. He’s singing like a canary about every hidden bank account and offshore asset, hoping for a reduced sentence. But cooperation or not, he’s still facing a minimum of ten to fifteen years in federal prison for his role in the embezzlement and cover-up."
"He deserves every year," I said firmly, feeling no pity left for the man I had once loved. "When can I file the final divorce papers?"
"The district attorney’s office has already expedited the paperwork for you," Maya answered, handing me a fresh stack of legal documents. "You can sign them right now, and our office will file them with the family court before the end of the day. You are cutting every legal tie to the Mercer name, Nora. Completely and permanently."

I picked up a pen, my hand steady and resolute. As my signature swept across the parchment, sealing the end of a nightmare, I knew that a new chapter of my life was beginning—one built on strength, truth, and absolute freedom.
