Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

Three years later. The sun crested over the Pacific Ocean, casting a brilliant golden glow across the cliffs of Big Sur. I stood on the wooden deck of my new home—a modest, beautiful coastal house built entirely with my own hard work, independent success, and forensic consulting fees.

Maya, now a bright, energetic three-year-old toddler with curls framing her face, ran across the grass shouting, "Mommy, look! A butterfly!"

I laughed, walking over to scoop her up into my arms, spinning her around as she giggled with pure delight. We walked down the coastal path toward the beach, our footprints leaving twin trails in the wet sand.

Far out on the horizon, cargo ships sailed silently toward distant ports, their destinations unknown and full of possibility. I paused for a moment, letting the cool ocean spray wash over my bare feet.

The past was a closed chapter, safely stored away in old courtroom archives. But as I looked down at my daughter’s bright, fearless eyes smiling up at me, I knew that our story was only just beginning.
