Chapter 10 - Claire's Secret Partner

While Diane sat stubbornly in her cell refusing all visitors, Claire cracked under the weight of solitary confinement and the reality of facing ten years in federal prison.

Her public defender contacted our legal team with an urgent offer: Claire wanted a full plea deal in exchange for turning state's witness against not only Diane, but a secret co-conspirator nobody in the family knew about.

Marcus and I met Claire in a secure interview room at the county jail. Claire looked exhausted, her hair unwashed, her designer clothes replaced by standard inmate scrubs.

'I'll tell you everything,' Claire blurted out the second we sat down, tears streaming down her face. 'I swear I didn't plan the Dubai sabotage! That wasn't me!'

I narrowed my eyes. 'Dubai sabotage? What are you talking about, Claire?'

Claire sniffed loudly, wiping her nose with her sleeve. 'Mom didn't just steal your money here in Chicago, Ethan. She had help from someone overseas. Someone who wanted your engineering career destroyed so you could never come back financially independent.'

Marcus leaned forward, pen poised over his notepad. 'Name names, Claire. Who?'

'Marcus Sterling,' Claire whispered, glancing nervously at the door. 'Harrison Sterling's son—mom's defense attorney's boy. He's an international trade consultant based in Dubai.'

My heart skipped a beat. Marcus Sterling. He was the local project coordinator I had worked with on the hospital construction site in Dubai—the very man who had emailed me the fake sabotage allegations two days ago.

'Marcus Sterling,' I repeated slowly. 'He was my co-project manager in Dubai. He embezzled funds from the hospital site and tried to frame me for it.'

'Yes!' Claire cried, nodding frantically. 'Mom promised him a cut of our family estate once she successfully declared you legally incompetent and seized your engineering accounts. They had an agreement! He sabotaged your project in Dubai so you'd get fired and investigated, while mom cleaned out your apartment back home!'

The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying precision. This wasn't just a bitter mother lashing out at her son's choice of wife. It was a calculated, multi-national conspiracy designed to ruin me professionally, financially, and personally.

'Do you have proof of this?' Marcus asked sharply, tapping his pen. 'Emails, wire receipts, text messages?'

Claire reached into her pocket and pulled out a battered flash drive, sliding it across the table. 'All of it. Every email between mom and Marcus Sterling. Every offshore routing number. I downloaded it from mom's laptop before the cops raided the hotel.'

I picked up the flash drive, feeling the cool plastic in my palm. My mother hadn't just committed local grand larceny. She was part of an international white-collar conspiracy involving corporate sabotage.

'You actually helped us, Claire,' I said quietly, looking at my sister. 'This doesn't erase what you did to Emily and my son, but it will keep you out of maximum security prison.'

'Will I... will I get probation?' Claire whispered hopefully.

May you like

'You'll get a federal witness protection recommendation,' I replied, standing up with Marcus. 'Use it to start a new life far away from mom.'

As we walked out of the jail, Marcus looked at me with a grim smile. 'Well, Ethan. Your mother just upgraded her criminal charges from grand larceny to international racketeering. Federal indictments are coming for everyone.'
