Chapter 20 - New Year's Resolution

One year to the day after that freezing, nightmarish New Year's Eve, snow was once again falling gently outside our living room windows. But inside, the house was ablaze with warmth, laughter, and the soft, joyful gurgles of our one-year-old son playing with his Christmas toys.

We were hosting a small, intimate gathering—just a few close friends and Emily's parents, who had flown in from out of state to celebrate with us. No toxic relatives. No manipulation. No fear.

As the clock ticked closer to midnight, I stood by the fireplace holding a glass of sparkling cider, looking around the room. Emily walked over, leaning her head against my shoulder as we watched the New Year countdown play on the television screen.

'Can you believe it's been a whole year?' Emily whispered, her eyes shining with quiet gratitude.

'It feels like a lifetime ago,' I replied, wrapping my arm around her waist. 'A different lifetime entirely.'

On the television screen, the ball dropped in Times Square, and cheers erupted across the room as people hugged and welcomed the New Year.

Emily looked up at me, her smile radiant and full of promise. 'What's your New Year's resolution this time, Ethan?'

I smiled back, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips as our son laughed and clapped his tiny hands.

'To never take a single warm, peaceful moment for granted,' I said softly, looking out at the falling snow. 'And to always keep our doors locked against anyone who tries to take our happiness away.'

Outside, the winter wind howled against the glass, but inside, our home was a fortress of love, warmth, and unbreakable light. The past was behind us, the future was ours to build, and the story of our survival was only just beginning... with an open road stretching endlessly ahead into the bright unknown.
