Chapter 5 - The Hidden Bank Account

With Diane and Claire behind bars awaiting arraignment, the real forensic work began. I hired Marcus Vance—no relation, just Chicago's most relentless forensic accountant—to tear through every financial paper trail my mother had touched over the last decade.

We sat in a private conference room downtown, surrounded by towering stacks of bank statements, tax filings, and corporate registration documents.

'Ethan, your mother wasn't just skimming off your engineering salary,' Marcus said, sliding a thick ledger across the table and pointing to a highlighted column. 'She's been systematically draining your late father's estate trust since he passed away five years ago.'

I stared at the figures, feeling a cold knot twist in my stomach. 'My father left a three-million-dollar estate intended for my sister's education, family investments, and my mother's retirement. Where is it?'

'Gone,' Marcus said bluntly. 'Spread across four offshore accounts in the Bahamas, three shell companies registered under fake names, and two luxury condos in Miami purchased entirely under Claire's name.'

Emily gasped, leaning over my shoulder to read the ledger. 'Claire owns condos in Miami? On what salary? She worked part-time at a boutique for three months before quitting!'

'Precisely,' Marcus nodded, adjusting his glasses. 'Your sister has been living a jet-set lifestyle funded by your father's legacy and your recent engineering remittances. But here's the real kicker—the smoking gun.'

Marcus tapped a digital tablet, bringing up a scanned document. 'Look at this signature on the trust amendment filed four years ago.'

I squinted at the page. My father's signature appeared at the bottom, transferring sole executorship and absolute financial control to Diane, cutting me out of any direct estate oversight.

'That's my father's signature,' I murmured. 'Wait... no. Look at the capital 'V' in Vance. My father always crossed his loops with a double stroke. This one is single-stroked.'

'Bingo,' Marcus smiled grimly. 'It's a forgery. A remarkably good one, but a forgery nonetheless. If we can prove handwriting fraud, your mother's control over the entire estate dissolves instantly, and she faces an additional ten years for identity theft and probate fraud.'

'Can we prove it?' I asked.

'We already have,' Marcus said, pulling up a forensic handwriting analysis report. 'We compared it against your father's original medical charts from the hospital where he passed. The signature on the trust amendment was traced using a light-box overlay. It's an exact geometric match to your father's signature on an intake form—meaning someone literally placed paper over his medical record and traced his signature while he was unconscious.'

A heavy silence settled over the room. Traced from a medical chart while my father was dying in a hospital bed. My own mother had stooped to desecrating my father's final days for control of his money.

'File the motion,' I said, my voice cold as ice. 'File it with the district attorney and the probate court immediately. I want no plea bargains. I want maximum sentencing.'

Marcus nodded, gathering his files. 'Done. But be warned, Ethan. When cornered like a rat, people like your mother don't surrender. They start dragging everyone down with them.'
