Chapter 9 - The Dinner Party Ambush

Word travels fast in Chicago's high-society circles. Within forty-eight hours of Diane's arrest, the exclusive country clubs, charity boards, and high-end galas where my mother had reigned as an untouchable queen were buzzing with scandal.

To capitalize on the public exposure and cut off any backdoor political influence Diane's friends might try to wield, Marcus Vance suggested a bold strategic move: attend the annual Winter Philanthropic Gala at the Drake Hotel, where Diane was scheduled to be honored as 'Philanthropist of the Year.'

'You want us to go to her gala?' Emily asked, looking at her reflection in a stunning emerald evening gown I had bought her to replace everything my mother had thrown away. 'Ethan, everyone there knows her. They'll stare.'

'Let them stare,' I said, adjusting my bowtie in the mirror. 'They need to see that we aren't hiding. More importantly, they need to know the truth before Diane's allies try to spin the narrative in the press.'

When we stepped into the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, the glittering chandelier light reflected off crystal glasses and silk gowns. Conversations hummed smoothly across tables draped in white linen—until heads began to turn.

Whispers swept through the room like wildfire.

'Isn't that her son? The one who put her in jail?'

'Good lord, look at his wife. She looks stunning, not at all what Diane described...''

'I heard Diane forged her late husband's will to steal millions...'

We walked calmly to our assigned table near the front. Before we could even sit down, Julian Vance—my mother's influential brother and my estranged uncle—intercepted us, his face purple with rage.

'Have you completely lost your mind, Ethan?' Julian hissed, grabbing my lapel. 'Putting your own mother in a jail cell on New Year's Eve? For what? Some petty domestic spat over furniture?'

I calmly removed his hand from my suit jacket and smoothed the fabric. 'Uncle Julian, your sister embezzled eighty thousand dollars, forged a medical signature to steal my father's estate, and left her postpartum daughter-in-law and newborn grandson to freeze in a stripped apartment. If you call that a petty spat, your moral compass is as broken as hers.'

Julian sneered, lowering his voice. 'She's your mother! You handle family disputes behind closed doors, you ungrateful little—'

'Keep your voice down, Julian,' a smooth, authoritative voice interrupted behind us.

We turned to see District Attorney Vance walking up, accompanied by two federal prosecutors. DA Vance offered Emily a polite, reassuring nod before turning his piercing gaze onto my uncle.

'Mr. Vance,' the DA said calmly, 'interfering with an ongoing federal financial fraud investigation or intimidating witnesses constitutes obstruction of justice. Would you like to discuss that down at the precinct, or shall we continue enjoying the gala?'

Julian's face drained of color. He glared at me with pure hatred, muttered an obscenity under his breath, and stormed out of the ballroom.

Emily slipped her hand into mine, her fingers warm and steady. 'You handled that like a king, Ethan.'

'We're just getting started,' I whispered, looking around the glittering room. 'The people who enabled her for years are going to watch her empire burn right along with her.'
