Chapter 11 - The Second Plot Twist: The Dubai Connection

With Claire's flash drive in hand, our legal team moved with lightning speed. We bypassed local jurisdiction entirely and handed the evidence over to the FBI's white-collar crime division in downtown Chicago.
Special Agent Vance—yet another fortuitous coincidence of surnames—sat across from us in a secure briefing room, reviewing the decrypted email logs and offshore wire transfers.
'Mr. Vance, this evidence is explosive,' Agent Vance said, removing his glasses and rubbing his eyes. 'Marcus Sterling isn't just a rogue consultant. He's the primary subject of an ongoing federal investigation into kickbacks on Middle Eastern infrastructure projects. If your mother conspired with him to fabricate sabotage charges against you while simultaneously looting your domestic accounts, we're looking at RICO charges.'
'Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act,' I translated grimly. 'Meaning twenty years minimum for both of them.'
'At least,' Agent Vance nodded. 'Furthermore, we can issue an international red notice through Interpol for Marcus Sterling's immediate arrest in Dubai, and freeze any foreign assets connected to your mother's shell corporations.'
Emily, holding our baby peacefully in a sling across her chest, let out a long breath. 'Does this mean... does this mean they can't ever hurt us again?'
'It means their web of control is officially shredded,' Agent Vance assured her with a warm smile. 'They won't have the financial resources or the legal standing to bother you ever again.'
That evening, back in our temporary corporate penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, I finally felt the heavy burden on my shoulders begin to lift. For months, I had carried the invisible weight of supporting my family while wondering why my mother constantly criticized my choices. Now I knew: I was never her son in her eyes. I was simply an ATM machine—a financial asset to be controlled, milked, and discarded when I dared to build a life of my own with Emily.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an incoming call from an unknown international number. Country code +971—Dubai.
I stared at the screen for a second, then pressed accept and put it on speaker.
'Hello, Ethan,' a familiar, nervous voice spoke through the static. It was Marcus Sterling.
'Marcus,' I said coldly. 'Enjoying the Dubai sunshine while it lasts?'
There was a tense pause on the other end. 'Look, Ethan, let's be reasonable. I heard about the FBI warrants. We can make a deal. I'll drop the sabotage claims against your engineering firm, and you drop the international financial complaints. We walk away clean.'
I chuckled softly, leaning back against the couch. 'Walk away clean? Marcus, Interpol red notices were issued thirty minutes ago. Federal marshals are probably boarding your corporate office in Dubai right now to cuff you to a desk. There is no deal.'
'You're making a massive mistake!' Sterling's voice cracked with rising panic. 'Your mother has powerful friends! She'll—'
'My mother is currently wearing an orange jumpsuit in a Cook County holding cell,' I interrupted smoothly. 'And very soon, you'll be joining her in federal custody. Have a nice flight home, Marcus.'
I hung up the phone and blocked the number. Emily looked up from nursing our son, a soft, radiant smile touching her lips for the first time in weeks.

'Was that him?' she asked.
'That was a drowning man grasping at straws,' I said, pulling her close. 'It's over, Emily. The nightmare is finally ending.'
