Chapter 7 - The First Plot Twist: The Fake Will

The plot thickened the following morning when Marcus Vance called me with an urgent update that changed the entire legal landscape.
I met him at his downtown office. He slammed a thick folder onto his desk, his expression grave.
'Ethan, you remember the forged trust amendment we found?' Marcus asked.
'Of course. The one where she traced my father's signature from a hospital intake form,' I replied, sitting down.
'That was just the warmup,' Marcus said grimly, sliding a yellowed envelope across the desk. 'This came from your father's safety deposit box at First Chicago Bank. It was registered under a dual-key system that required both your father and a secondary executor to open—and your mother just tried to access it using a forged court order yesterday.'
I opened the envelope. Inside was a notarized document dated two weeks before my father passed away. It was a true, unaltered will.
I scanned the legal jargon until my eyes locked onto the beneficiary clauses. My breath caught in my throat.
'What is this?' I whispered.
'Your father knew your mother was draining his accounts,' Marcus explained quietly. 'He knew she was manipulative and cruel. In this true will, he left his entire estate—including the family home, the commercial properties, and all liquid assets—directly to you, with a strict clause: Diane was to receive a modest monthly stipend contingent on good behavior, and Claire was placed in a supervised trust.'
I stared at the paper in disbelief. 'My mother told me for five years that dad left everything to her because I abandoned the family business for engineering.'
'It was a complete fabrication,' Marcus said. 'She intercepted the original will, hid it in a secure vault, and presented a forged probate petition after your father passed. Because you were working overseas in Dubai and trusted her blindly, nobody questioned her.'
Emily, who had been sitting quietly beside me holding our baby, placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. 'Ethan... your father knew. He tried to protect you.'
A heavy wave of emotion washed over me—grief for my father, anger at my mother, and a fierce determination to set things right. If this true will was submitted to the probate court, Diane's entire empire of lies would collapse instantly. Not only would she face criminal charges for grand larceny and wire fraud, but she would also be stripped of every penny of the estate she had weaponized against us.

'File it immediately,' I said, my voice resolute. 'Get a judge's emergency signature. Let's see how my mother handles losing everything she stole.'
Little did I know, Diane had one last desperate card to play—and it involved a secret neither Claire nor I knew existed.
