Chapter 11 - Blood in the Water

News of Julian Cross’s high-profile federal arrest in Chicago spread like wildfire across the financial world overnight. By Wednesday morning, Blackwell Group’s stock price had begun a volatile roller-coaster ride, with Wall Street analysts debating whether the historic company could survive the massive executive corruption scandal.

Back in New York, Avery wasted no time. At 9:00 AM, she convened an emergency meeting of the board of directors in the main corporate boardroom.

Sitting at the center of the table was Arthur Sterling. The silver-haired board member looked pale, his hands shaking slightly as he tried to pour himself a glass of water. Sitting around the table were the remaining six board members, all looking anxious and exhausted.

Avery walked into the room, followed by David Vance and two armed security officers. She did not sit down. She stood at the head of the table, holding a thick black binder.

"Good morning, everyone," Avery said smoothly. "Before we begin our formal agenda, there is an urgent governance matter we must address immediately."

Arthur Sterling cleared his throat nervously. "Avery, given Julian's unfortunate arrest in Chicago, I move that we immediately appoint an external crisis management firm to—"

"Quiet, Arthur," Avery interrupted coldly.

Sterling blinked in shock. "I beg your pardon?"

Avery slammed the heavy black binder onto the glass table directly in front of Sterling. The loud thud made several board members flinch.

"Inside that binder," Avery announced, her voice echoing clearly, "are the fully decrypted financial ledgers recovered from Julian’s private server in Chicago last night. They detail twelve million dollars in illegal wire transfers authorized by Arthur Sterling into personal Swiss accounts over a six-year period."

Gasps filled the boardroom. Board members turned to stare at Sterling in absolute horor.

"This is an outrageous lie!" Sterling yelled, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled backward into the wall. "This is a malicious fabrication by a desperate interim CEO trying to grab absolute power!"

"The physical ledger contains your verified electronic signature, Arthur," David Vance spoke up calmly from the side of the room. "And federal prosecutors in Chicago have already cross-referenced the Swiss bank account numbers with your personal tax disclosures. The FBI is currently waiting downstairs in the lobby."

Sterling’s face drained of all color. He slowly sank back against the wall, clutching his chest as if he couldn't breathe.

"You have two choices, Arthur," Avery said, stepping closer to him. "You can sign a full confession and surrender your entire six percent voting block back to the company treasury right now... or you can walk out those front doors in handcuffs in front of the press cameras waiting outside."

The room was completely silent. Every board member watched Sterling, waiting for his response. The arrogant old man who had ruled the boardroom for two decades was completely broken.

"Where... where do I sign?" Sterling whispered, his voice trembling pitiably.

David Vance immediately stepped forward and placed a legal surrender document on the table, along with a pen. With trembling fingers, Sterling signed his name, officially forfeiting his massive shareholding and resigning from the board forever.

Once Sterling was escorted out of the building by security, Avery turned to address the remaining board members.

"The corruption that plagued this company ends today," Avery declared with absolute authority. "We are going to rebuild Blackwell Group on a foundation of absolute transparency, real accountability, and uncompromising integrity. If anyone sitting at this table is uncomfortable with that standard, hand in your resignation now."

Not a single board member moved. Instead, Eleanor Price slowly stood up and began to clap. Within seconds, every remaining board member joined in, giving Avery Sloan a standing ovation.

She had successfully purged the rot. She had neutralized the hostile takeover. The crown was finally hers.
