Chapter 5 - The Fall of Royalty

Caroline finally found her voice, her panic transforming into pure, concentrated hatred as she glared at Avery on the stage. "You calculated this whole thing! You wanted this exact moment!"
Avery looked down at her with calm detachment. "No, Caroline. I simply stopped protecting you."
That single sentence hit the room harder than anything else Avery had said. The audience suddenly grasped the full, horrifying magnitude of the situation. The scandal wasn't just that Julian and Caroline were committing corporate fraud to fund an illicit affair. The real scandal was that Avery Sloan had known every single detail.
The quiet woman. The gray mouse. The tireless worker they had talked down to, marginalized, patronized, and quietly scapegoated. She had discovered everything. She had systematically gathered ironclad digital and physical evidence. She had presented it to the board. And she had maintained total composure, holding her tongue not because she was intimidated, but because she was strategically choosing the exact right moment to strike.
And now, every powerful person in the room had to swallow the deeply uncomfortable truth that the least flashy person in the company had been the most lethal force in the room all along.
Before Caroline could utter another word, Eleanor Price rose majestically from her seat at the head table.
"That is quite enough," Eleanor said. Her commanding voice sliced through the chaotic whispers of the ballroom with surgical precision.
Eleanor stepped gracefully into the open floor space between the dining tables. Dressed in a sharply tailored black tuxedo suit, her silver hair styled impeccably, she was the kind of legendary titan who never needed to raise her voice to exert absolute control over a room.
"Three weeks ago," Eleanor announced clearly to the crowd, "Ms. Sloan presented undeniable evidence of severe corporate misconduct to Blackwell’s independent governance committee. Outside legal counsel completed its preliminary forensic audit earlier this afternoon."
The room went completely breathless.
"Those forensic findings confirm an undisclosed, long-term sexual relationship between Mr. Cross and Ms. Mercer, widespread misappropriation of corporate assets, retaliatory employment actions against staff, and additional undisclosed romantic conflicts tied to company expenditures."
A loud, sharp murmur rippled across the room. More than one affair. More than one financial lie. Deep, systemic rot far worse than anyone had imagined.
Julian hung his head, unable to face the judgment of the room. Caroline stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock.
Eleanor looked directly at Julian. "Mr. Cross tendered his resignation to the board of directors one hour ago. The board has formally accepted it, effective immediately."
The silence in the room was deafening.
Julian finally spoke, but his smooth, charismatic tone was entirely gone. He sounded like a broken man whose superficial armor had been violently stripped away. "I made grave errors in judgment that compromised this institution," he muttered weakly. "For that, I accept full responsibility."
Claire Cross gave a bitter, cold laugh. "Now you take responsibility? When you're trapped on stage?"
Eleanor then turned her gaze upward toward Avery.
"Effective immediately," Eleanor announced loudly, "the board of directors has unanimous named Avery Sloan as interim Chief Executive Officer of Blackwell Group."
A massive shockwave rippled through the room. It was no longer the murmur of trashy gossip. It was the sudden, overwhelming wave of genuine respect.
Because a second profound truth immediately hit everyone in the room: the board hadn't chosen Avery out of desperate pity or because of tonight's dramatic scene. They had chosen Avery because she was the person who had already been single-handedly keeping the entire corporation running while arrogant leaders played political games. She was the one who had quietly stabilized European operations, solved the crippling supply chain crisis, reassured panicked lenders, and cleaned up executive messes without ever demanding applause or special recognition.
Julian had craved the spotlight. Avery had carried the real weight.
And now, every elite member of Manhattan society had to endure the shame of realizing they had spent years foolishly underestimating the wrong woman.
Caroline turned toward Julian in absolute disbelief. "You knew she was taking your job?! You knew before we walked in here?!"
Julian said nothing. His silence was the ultimate betrayal.
Caroline realized the full extent of her humiliation. The woman she had treated like a worthless nobody hadn't just exposed her secret—she had completely disarmed her, taken her power, and claimed her corporate crown.
"You ruined our lives!" Caroline shrieked, her voice cracking with fury.
Avery stepped down from the stage and walked calmly over to where Caroline stood. The dried wine stain on her white dress had darkened into a deep burgundy color, framing her like a badge of combat.
"No, Caroline," Avery said softly, her voice carrying only to those standing right beside them. "You buried yourselves. I just stopped standing in front of the grave."
Two heavy security guards immediately moved in from the ballroom doors. Julian offered no resistance whatsoever as he was led away. Caroline, however, fought back, wildly pushing away the security officer's hands as she tried to salvage a tiny scrap of her dignity.
"Get your hands off me!" she screamed.
Owen looked at his wife with an expression drained of all emotion except pure, crushing exhaustion. "For once in your miserable life, Caroline," Owen said quietly, "stop making this uglier than it already is."
That statement hit Caroline harder than a physical blow. She collapsed into tears as security firmly escorted both her and Julian out of the ballroom through the side doors. The wealthy crowd parted silently to let them pass—not out of respect, but out of absolute disgust.

Avery stood alone in the middle of the grand room in her ruined white dress. As the side doors clicked shut, she felt an unexpected emotion wash over her.
It wasn't petty triumph. It was profound, overwhelming relief. The incredible relief that only comes when a massive lie finally collapses under the sheer weight of the truth.
