Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after the explosive gala, the initial dust had settled, but the hard, tedious work of rebuilding Blackwell Group had only just begun. Avery arrived at the corporate headquarters on Park Avenue at 6:00 AM, wearing a sharp navy blue trouser suit. As she walked through the polished glass doors of the executive suite, she felt a strange, lingering chill in the air.
The high-rise building was eerily quiet at this hour. The grand CEO corner office, which had belonged to Julian Cross for ten long years, sat empty. The heavy mahogany door was unlocked.
Avery pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room still smelled subtly of Julian’s expensive cologne and aged Scotch. On his mahogany desk sat a framed photograph of Julian and Caroline at a corporate retreat three years ago, both smiling broadly at the camera while standing in front of a private jet.
Avery picked up the frame, looked at it for a brief moment without anger, and placed it inside a box destined for Julian’s legal team.
Suddenly, her desk phone rang, startling her in the quiet room. She walked over to her temporary desk and picked up the receiver.
"Avery Sloan," she answered crisply.
"Avery... it's Owen," a voice said quietly on the line.
Avery paused. Owen Mercer sounded completely hollowed out, his voice stripped of the confident authority he had possessed as Chief Financial Officer.
"Owen," Avery said carefully. "I didn't expect to hear from you."
"I'm calling from my lawyer's office," Owen said, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. "I just finalized the divorce papers with Caroline's legal team this morning. She's demanding half of my personal assets, Avery. She claims I abandoned her after the gala."
"I'm sorry you're going through this, Owen," Avery said genuinely. "You didn't deserve to be dragged into their mess."
"I was blind, Avery," Owen whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "Ten years... ten years under my own roof, and I never saw it. How did I not see it?"
"Because you trusted her, Owen," Avery replied softly. "Trust isn't a flaw. Betraying it is."
There was a long pause on the phone. "I handed in my formal resignation to Eleanor Price an hour ago," Owen said quietly. "I can't stay at Blackwell. Every hallway reminds me of what she did. But before I leave... I need to warn you about something."
Avery straightened her back, her sharp instincts instantly alert. "Warn me about what?"
"Julian isn't giving up," Owen revealed, lowering his voice even further. "He met with a syndicate of offshore hedge fund investors in Miami two nights ago. He's building a hostile takeover bid to buy back controlling shares of Blackwell Group. He wants to strip the company down, sell off its assets, and force you out in shame."
Avery felt a cold spark of determination ignite in her chest. "Julian thinks he can launch a hostile takeover against me?"
"He's bitter, Avery. He believes you stole his life's work," Owen warned. "And he has powerful allies who don't want a reformer like you running this company. Watch your back."
"Thank you for telling me, Owen," Avery said firmly. "Take care of yourself."
After hanging up the phone, Avery walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out over the sweeping views of New York City. Julian Cross thought he could slink away into the shadows, regroup with corrupt offshore billionaires, and launch a surprise attack to destroy her.

He truly hadn't learned a single lesson from the gala.
Avery smiled a slow, dangerous smile. If Julian Cross wanted a war for the soul of Blackwell Group, she was more than ready to give him one.
