Chapter 13 - Secrets of the Vault

The strategic alliance between Avery Sloan and Claire Cross sent shockwaves through Manhattan's elite financial circles. When Claire appeared on CNBC less than an hour later, she stunned the host by announcing that Vanguard Global Capital’s tender offer was officially withdrawn. Instead, Claire announced a massive two-hundred-million-dollar personal investment into Blackwell Group's new equity fund, expressing total confidence in Avery Sloan’s leadership.
Wall Street responded with unprecedented enthusiasm. Blackwell’s stock price surged by fifteen percent in a single afternoon, marking the biggest single-day gain in the company's forty-year history.
Three days later, Avery, Claire, and Marcus Vance gathered in the high-security basement vault of Blackwell Group’s headquarters. Following Arthur Sterling’s confession, legal protocol required a full physical inventory of the corporate safety deposit boxes.
The security guard unlocked the heavy steel door, revealing a small, climate-controlled room lined with polished brass lockboxes.
"Box 714," Marcus said, checking the legal ledger. "This was Julian Cross’s personal corporate box. Only the CEO key and the board chair key can open it together."
Eleanor Price stepped forward with her master key, while Avery inserted the CEO key. Together, they turned the keys simultaneously. The heavy brass lock clicked open.
Inside the box sat a thick leather-bound journal and a sleek silver USB drive.
Avery pulled the silver USB drive out and plugged it into a secure laptop Marcus had brought down. The screen flickered to life, displaying a single password-protected database.
"Claire, do you know the password?" Avery asked quietly.
Claire examined the screen. "Try 'Langford2014'. That was the year Julian bought his first offshore property."
Marcus typed the code into the laptop. The screen flashed green: *ACCESS GRANTED.*
A massive list of archived files loaded onto the screen. As Marcus scrolled through the documents, Avery’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"My God..." Marcus whispered, staring at the screen. "This isn't just internal corporate fraud. Julian was keeping detailed blackmail files on dozens of high-profile politicians, industry regulators, and rival CEOs."
Claire leaned closer to the screen, her face turning pale. "Julian was using corporate funds to hire private intelligence operatives to spy on our competitors... and on board members."
Avery clicked on a folder labeled *Sloan, A.*
She opened the file. Inside were dozens of surveillance photographs of herself over the past two years—walking to her apartment, eating dinner with her family, entering the office late at night. There were also forged documents designed to frame Avery for accounting fraud if she ever attempted to expose Julian’s corruption.
A cold rage washed over Avery. Julian Cross had been planning to destroy her life from the very moment she was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. He had viewed her integrity as a mortal threat from day one.
"He had a complete trap prepared for you, Avery," Marcus said softly, his voice full of anger. "If you hadn't gone public at the gala, he would have used these forged documents to put you in prison."
Avery stared at the screen, her hands clenched into tight fists. She took a deep, steadying breath, allowing her icy composure to reclaim her thoughts.
"Close the database, Marcus," Avery ordered calmly.
"Avery, we can use these blackmail files to destroy every one of Julian’s remaining political allies!" Claire suggested fiercely.
"No, Claire," Avery said firmly, looking her partner in the eye. "We are not blackmailers. We don't play dirty games, and we don't destroy people's lives for leverage. Hand this entire drive directly to Special Agent Miller at the FBI. Let justice handle it legally."

Claire looked at Avery with intense admiration. "You really are different, aren't you? Anyone else in this city would have used that drive to gain absolute control over Manhattan."
"Power gained through blackmail isn't power, Claire," Avery replied, closing the laptop screen. "It's just a trap waiting to spring. We build our power on truth."
