Chapter 12 - A Dangerous Alliance

Despite the major victory in the boardroom, the corporate battle was far from over. Three days after Arthur Sterling's dramatic removal, Marcus Vance rushed into Avery’s office with alarming news.

"Avery, we have a major problem," Marcus said, placing a tablet on her desk. "Apex Holdings just launched a massive public tender offer for Blackwell Group stock. They are offering twenty percent above market value to buy out retail and institutional shareholders."

Avery frowned, examining the financial data on the tablet. "Where are they getting the capital? Sterling’s accounts were frozen by the federal government."

"They found a new financial backer," Marcus revealed nervously. "A massive foreign private equity firm called Vanguard Global Capital. And guess who Vanguard just hired as their chief strategic advisor?"

Avery’s eyes hardened. "Claire Cross."

Marcus nodded slowly. "Julian’s ex-wife. She teamed up with Vanguard. She’s using her personal knowledge of Blackwell's inner workings—and her massive divorce settlement capital—to fund Apex Holdings. She wants complete revenge on Blackwell Group for the humiliation her family suffered."

Avery leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, processing the tactical shift. Claire Cross was a brilliant, ruthless socialite who knew every wealthy investor in Manhattan. Unlike Julian, Claire wasn't motivated by simple greed—she was motivated by pure, burning humiliation.

"Claire thinks I'm her enemy," Avery realized quietly. "She thinks that because I exposed the scandal, I ruined her life."

"She’s scheduled a live television interview on CNBC in one hour," Marcus warned. "She’s planning to publicly bash our management team and urge shareholders to sell their stock to Vanguard."

"Cancel my afternoon appointments, Marcus," Avery commanded, standing up immediately. "Find out where Claire is doing the interview. I'm going to talk to her face-to-face."

An hour later, Avery arrived at the CNBC television studios in midtown Manhattan. Stepping through the green room doors, she saw Claire Cross sitting in a makeup chair. Claire was dressed in an impeccable cream-colored suit, looking remarkably poised despite the chaotic weeks she had endured.

Claire caught Avery’s reflection in the vanity mirror and froze. She dismissed the makeup artist with a sharp wave of her hand and slowly turned around.

"Avery," Claire said coldly, her tone dripping with quiet hostility. "Did you come here to gloat about my husband's arrest? Or did you come to watch me destroy your precious company on national television?"

Avery walked calmly into the green room and closed the door behind her.

"I came here to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life, Claire," Avery said softly.

Claire laughed bitterly. "A mistake? Buying out Blackwell Group and kicking your ungrateful board out into the street isn't a mistake, Avery. It's justice!"

"Vanguard Global Capital doesn't care about justice, Claire," Avery stated firmly, taking a step closer. "They are predatory asset strippers. The moment Vanguard acquires controlling interest in Blackwell, they will dismantle the company, lay off ten thousand innocent employees, and liquidate our pension funds. You are being used."

"Julian humiliated me in front of the entire world!" Claire shouted, her eyes glistening with suppressed tears of rage. "My marriage was a ten-year lie! My family name is ruined! I want to burn that company to the ground!"

"Julian humiliated you, Claire," Avery said gently, her voice full of genuine empathy. "Not the ten thousand hardworking employees who build our products every day. Not the innocent people whose livelihoods depend on Blackwell. Don't let your pain turn you into the very thing that destroyed your life."

Claire stared at Avery, her chest heaving as she struggled to hold back her emotions. For the first time, the polished socialite's armor cracked, revealing a deeply hurt, betrayed woman.

"Julian cheated on both of us, Claire," Avery continued quietly. "He used your social status to build his power, and he used my hard work to maintain it. Why are we fighting each other while the men who broke this company walk away?"

Claire swallowed hard, looking away. "What... what are you proposing, Avery?"

"Team up with me," Avery offered, extending her hand. "Use your capital and influence to invest directly in Blackwell's new restructuring plan. Help me rebuild this company into something clean, honest, and powerful. Show the world that you aren't a victim—you're a builder."

Claire looked down at Avery’s outstretched hand for a long, intense moment. The studio floor manager suddenly knocked on the door. "Ms. Cross, you're on air in two minutes!"

May you like

Claire took a deep breath, wiped a single tear from her cheek, and looked directly into Avery’s eyes.

"Cancel the Vanguard offer," Claire said firmly to her assistant standing in the corner. Then she turned to Avery and grasped her hand tightly. "Let's go build something real."
