Chapter 14 - The Trap is Set

With the blackmail files securely handed over to federal authorities, the legal net around Julian Cross and his corrupt network tightened completely. However, Julian’s defense attorneys were notorious corporate pit bulls. They filed a flurry of aggressive motions in federal court, attempting to throw out the Chicago server evidence on technical procedural grounds.

On a rainy Thursday morning, Avery received an urgent visit from David Vance in her corner office.

"Julian’s lead defense attorney, Richard Hayes, just filed a motion to dismiss all charges," David reported, handing her a legal brief. "Hayes is arguing that Caroline Mercer acted as an unauthorized third party when she gave you the server room access code, claiming the evidence was obtained illegally."

Avery reviewed the legal documents quickly. "Is the argument legally sound?"

"It’s a dangerous grey area," David admitted grimly. "If the federal judge agrees with Hayes, the Chicago server files could be ruled inadmissible in court. Julian could walk free on a technicality."

"We can't let that happen," Avery said, her eyes narrowing. "What about Caroline? Will she testify formally that she gave the code voluntarily?"

David hesitated. "Caroline has gone completely into hiding. Her private attorney says she’s terrified for her life. Julian’s associates have been sending her subtle threats to keep her quiet."

Avery stood up from her desk and grabbed her trench coat. "Where is Caroline staying?"

Forty minutes later, Avery stepped out of a private car outside a modest apartment building in Queens. Rain was pouring heavily from the dark gray sky. She walked up the stairs to apartment 3B and knocked firmly on the door.

The door opened an inch, secured by a heavy brass chain. Caroline Mercer’s frightened eyes peered through the crack. She looked pale, exhausted, and broken, her hair unstyled and dark circles under her eyes.

"Avery?" Caroline whispered in shock. "What are you doing here?"

"Unchain the door, Caroline," Avery said calmly through the rain. "We need to talk."

Caroline hesitated for a moment before unlatching the chain and opening the door. The small apartment was cluttered with cardboard packing boxes.

Avery stepped inside, shaking the rainwater from her umbrella. "Julian’s lawyers are trying to throw out the Chicago server evidence. They claim you were coerced."

"Julian’s men called me two nights ago, Avery!" Caroline sobbed, wringing her hands nervously. "They said that if I set foot inside a courtroom to testify against Julian, they will ruin me completely! They'll make sure I spend ten years in prison alongside him!"

Avery walked over to Caroline and looked directly into her frightened face.

"Caroline," Avery said, her tone steady and powerful. "Two weeks ago, you dumped a glass of wine down my dress because you thought kicking me down would save you. It didn't. Running away now won't save you either. Julian will use you as his scapegoat the second you prove useless to him."

Caroline covered her face with her hands, weeping bitterly. "I have nothing left, Avery... my marriage is gone, my career is destroyed, my reputation is trash. Everyone hates me!"

"You can't undo the past, Caroline," Avery said softly, putting a firm hand on Caroline’s trembling shoulder. "But you can choose how this ends. You can hide in this dark apartment like a coward... or you can stand up in that courtroom, tell the absolute truth, and help me put Julian Cross where he belongs."

Caroline looked up at Avery, her tear-stained eyes wide with disbelief. "Why are you helping me? After everything I did to you?"

Avery smiled sadly. "Because unlike you and Julian, I don't crush people when they're down. I give them a choice to stand up."

Caroline stared at Avery for a long, silent moment. She slowly wiped her tears away, took a deep breath, and straightened her back.

"Tell the federal prosecutors I'll testify," Caroline said, a new spark of resolve in her voice. "I'll tell them everything."
