Chapter 10 - The Political Trap

Two hours after escaping the collapsing cave, Julian, Sarah, Clara, and Obsidian arrived at a secluded forest ranger station five miles down the mountain. The ranger, a veteran officer who had known David Montgomery years ago, immediately provided them with a secure satellite communication line, heavy winter clothes, and a horse transport trailer.
Inside the warm station, Julian sat at a metal desk, plugging the encrypted USB flash drives from David's safe into a secure state prosecutor terminal. The screen flickered to life, displaying hundreds of banking ledgers, wire transfer receipts, and recorded audio files.
"This is extraordinary," Julian said, his eyes scanning the data. "David didn't just record financial transactions. He secretly recorded phone conversations between Victor Hale and Governor Sterling."
Sarah leaned over his shoulder, pressing play on a digital audio file dated seven years ago.
A sharp, recognizable voice filled the room—Governor Raymond Sterling.
*“Listen to me, Victor. David Montgomery has turned over the full audit logs to my desk. If those logs reach the Federal Grand Jury, we are both going to federal prison for life. Handle Montgomery tonight. Make it look like a tragic riding accident. I will ensure the state police report is buried.”*
Sarah gasped, her hands shaking with rage. "It's an explicit audio confession to conspiracy to commit murder. This is the absolute smoking gun."
"It's enough to arrest the Governor of the state," Julian said grimly. "But we have a massive problem. Sterling controls the State Capitol, the State Police Commissioner, and the local news outlets. If we try to file a standard arrest warrant through normal court channels, Sterling's judges will throw it out or tip him off before we can execute it."
"Then how do we arrest him?" Sarah asked.
Clara walked over to the desk, pointing at a calendar hanging on the wall. A specific date was circled in red ink: *TONIGHT - THE ANNUAL GOVERNOR’S STATE GALA AND VICTORY ADDRESS.*
"Tonight is the live televised Governor's Gala at the Capitol Center," Clara said, her dark eyes flashing. "All the news networks in the country will be broadcasting live. Every politician, judge, and citizen will be watching."
Julian stared at the calendar, a slow, brilliant smile spreading across his face. "Public exposure. Sterling thinks we're dead under five hundred tons of rock at Whispering Pines. He thinks he's completely safe."
"He’s going to step onto that podium tonight to deliver his speech," Sarah realized, catching onto the plan. "And we're going to interrupt the live broadcast with the audio recording."
"Not just the audio recording," Julian said, looking out the window at Obsidian, who was standing proudly in the snowy courtyard outside. "We're going to present the entire living truth."
Meanwhile, in the luxury executive office at the State Capitol, Governor Raymond Sterling stood in front of a full-length mirror, adjusting his silk tie. He smiled at his reflection, feeling completely victorious.
His chief of staff walked into the office, holding a glass of scotch. "Governor, the demolition crew at Whispering Pines confirmed the cave mouth has completely collapsed. Prosecutor Vance, Detective Jenkins, and the Montgomery girl are officially buried beneath five hundred tons of granite. The secondary evidence is destroyed."
Sterling took the scotch glass and took a slow, satisfied sip. "Tragic," Sterling said with a cold sneer. "An ambitious prosecutor lured into a dangerous mountain cavern by a delusional orphan. A terrible accident."

"The live television coverage for your gala address begins in one hour, sir," the chief of staff added. "The auditorium is already filled with three thousand guests, news reporters, and state officials."
"Excellent," Sterling said, slicking back his grey hair. "Tonight, I announce my candidacy for the United States Senate. And nobody left alive can stand in my way."
