Chapter 9 - Trapped Under the Mountain

The chilling threat echoed through the hollow cavern, sending small pebbles cascading down from the rocky ceiling. The heavy roar of the armored demolition vehicle outside rattled the wooden frame of the cabin.
"He's insane!" Sarah yelled, ducking as a small piece of loose rock smashed onto the porch roof. "He's going to trigger a total cave-in!"
Julian quickly stuffed the steel-bound ledger and the flash drives into a waterproof tactical pouch and strapped it tightly to his chest. "Sterling is desperate! He knows that if these documents leave this mountain, his life and career are completely over."
Outside, Governor Sterling’s voice echoed through the megaphone again. "Four minutes, Vance! Don't be a hero for a dead man's daughter! Hand over the evidence, and I will ensure you and Detective Jenkins leave this state alive! Refuse, and this cavern becomes your tomb!"
"He's lying!" Clara said firmly, standing close to Obsidian. "He promised my father he would protect our family if my father turned over the research, and then he let Victor set the stables on fire. He never leaves anyone alive!"
Julian looked around the dark cavern. The only exit was the front entrance, which was currently blocked by the massive armored bulldozer and dozens of armed guards. The walls of the cave were solid granite, except for a dark, narrow fissure in the back wall where a faint draft of freezing air was blowing.
"Sarah," Julian said, pointing toward the fissure. "Look at the wind blowing through that crack. There has to be a secondary exit leading out to the back of the ridge."
Sarah ran over to the narrow fissure, shining her flashlight into the abyss. "It’s extremely tight. A person can squeeze through, but it’s completely blocked by boulder debris near the floor. And there's no way Obsidian can fit through a crack that narrow!"
"We're not leaving Obsidian behind," Clara said fiercely, her hands clutching the black horse's dark mane. "He saved us! We don't leave him!"
Obsidian let out a low, intelligent huff. The giant black horse stepped up to the rocky fissure and shoved his broad shoulder against the pile of boulder debris blocking the lower opening.
"Wait... he's trying to clear the path!" Sarah realized.
"Three minutes!" Sterling's voice roared from outside. The engine of the armored bulldozer revved loudly, and its massive steel crushing jaw slammed against the ice curtain, shattering tons of blue ice and sending shockwaves tearing through the cave ceiling.
CRACK! A massive stalactite fell from the roof, shattering on the cabin floor.
"Work together!" Julian shouted. He and Sarah threw their weight against the loose boulders, while Obsidian put his immense strength behind them, pushing with his head and muscular shoulders.
With a deafening groan of grinding stone, the heavy boulder pile gave way, sliding down into a lower drainage channel and revealing a wider tunnel path that sloped upward toward the sky.
"It works! The tunnel opens up!" Sarah yelled, seeing daylight at the far end of the passage.
"Move! Go, go, go!" Julian urged.
Just as Clara, Sarah, and Julian scrambled into the narrow stone passage, the front cave entrance completely collapsed. The armored bulldozer smashed through the remaining ice wall, firing heavy demolition charges into the structural pillars of the cavern.
BOOM!
Tons of solid rock and crushed ice crashed down, completely obliterating the wooden cabin and sealing the main entrance in a avalanche of dust and debris.
Inside the dark rear tunnel, the air was thick with choking grey dust. Julian coughed heavily, shining his light through the cloud to check on the others. "Is everyone okay? Clara? Sarah?"
"We're here!" Sarah called out, helping Clara to her feet.
Obsidian emerged from the dust cloud, snorting loudly to clear his lungs, completely unscathed. The loyal horse nudged Clara's head gently, ensuring she was safe.
"Look," Clara pointed up ahead.
A few hundred feet above them, bright winter sunlight filtered down through the exit of the tunnel. They stepped out onto a high, snow-covered ridge overlooking the back valley of Whispering Pines.
Below them on the main road, Governor Sterling and his private army were standing near their vehicles, watching the collapsed cave entrance with smug satisfaction, assuming everyone inside had been crushed to death.

"He thinks he won," Julian said, his eyes burning with intense determination as he touched the pouch containing the evidence on his chest. "He thinks he buried the truth under that mountain."
Clara looked down at the governor’s convoy, her young face set like flint. "Let's go show him that the truth doesn't die."
