Chapter 4 - The Shadow Syndicate

The chilling warning echoed through the ruined office. Snow fluttered through the shattered window, dusting the floor with ice.

"What syndicate, Victor?" Julian demanded, grabbing the billionaire by his velvet collar and hauling him to his feet. "Talk! Who just broke into your house?"

Victor was trembling violently, all his arrogant composure completely shattered. "The Blackwood Syndicate... the international elite who funded my horse breeding network. David found out that we weren't just breeding champions—we were using luxury horse shipments to launder money and smuggle illegal weapons across borders!"

Clara stood by the doorway, her small hands clenched into tight fists. "My father tried to stop you. He went to the authorities, but you found out."

"I didn't want to kill him, Clara!" Victor cried out, tears of terror streaming down his face. "I swear I didn't want to! But Marcus Blackwood—the leader of the syndicate—told me that if David talked, my entire family would be wiped out! On the night of the storm, Marcus's men came to the ranch. They cornered David in the stables!"

"And what did you do?" Julian snapped.

"I... I locked the stable doors from the outside," Victor sobbed, hanging his head in shame. "They set fire to the building! Obsidian smashed through the wooden gates and escaped into the woods, but David... David was trapped inside. I framed it as a riding accident in the river to cover up the arson!"

Detective Sarah Jenkins immediately radioed for heavy backup. "All units, we have an active threat on the Hale Estate premises. Set up a perimeter on all surrounding exit roads immediately!"

Suddenly, the lights in the entire mansion flickered and died, plunging the estate into absolute darkness.

Screams echoed from the lower levels as the mansion's emergency generators failed to turn on. Outside, heavy automatic gunfire began to rain down upon the estate grounds. Red tracer rounds sliced through the darkness, taking out the police cruisers parked in the driveway.

"They've cut the power and locked down the communications!" Sarah shouted, drawing her firearm and pulling Clara behind a massive oak desk. "They're here to clean house!"

"They won't let anyone leave alive!" Victor whimpered, cowering on the floor. "Marcus Blackwood never leaves witnesses!"

Glass shattered throughout the lower floor as heavily armed men in black tactical gear burst into the mansion. The deep, heavy thud of silenced automatic rifles echoed up the stairwell.

"Julian, we can't hold this room!" Sarah warned, peeking out the door as tactical flashlights swept across the hallway walls. "They have tactical military gear!"

Obsidian let out a fierce, reverberating whinny. The giant black horse stomped his hooves impatiently, turning his head toward the back exit of the upper floor—a wooden service corridor that led directly to the elevated hayloft connecting to the stable grounds.

"Obsidian knows a way out," Clara said, her voice surprisingly steady amidst the chaos. "Follow him!"

"Are you insane?" Victor yelled. "We'll be sitting ducks!"

"Stay here and die then, Victor," Julian snapped, grabbing the leather journal and tucking it securely under his coat. "Sarah, cover the rear. Clara, lead the way!"

They dashed into the dark service corridor just as a heavy burst of gunfire tore through the office doors behind them. Obsidian surged ahead, his massive form clearing obstacles in the dark with supernatural precision.

They ran through the wooden gantry connecting the main house to the old barn facilities. Behind them, black-clad mercenaries moved with ruthless military efficiency, sweeping room by room.

"There they are!" a mercenary yelled from the hallway behind them, raising his rifle.

Before the mercenary could squeeze the trigger, Obsidian whirled around in the narrow corridor and delivered a devastating double-leg kick to the heavy wooden support beam of the gantry.

CRACK!

The support beams snapped like twigs under the horse's immense strength. The section of the corridor collapsed instantly, sending tons of wood and stone crashing down, completely blocking the hallway and trapping the mercenaries on the other side.

"Good boy, Obsidian!" Clara cried out, hugging the stallion's neck.

They burst out into the freezing night air near the edge of the dark woods bordering the estate. But as they caught their breath in the snow, a low, smooth voice spoke from the shadows ahead.

"Impressive. Truly impressive for a child and a farm animal."

A tall figure stepped into the light of the moon, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries. He wore a cashmere overcoat, carried a gold-topped cane, and possessed eyes as cold and lifeless as a reptile's.

It was Marcus Blackwood.

"Good evening, Victor," Marcus said smoothly, raising a silenced pistol. "I see you've brought me the Montgomery girl and her father's troublesome book."
