Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Stables

Within an hour, the grand ballroom was filled with flashing red and blue lights as police cruisers surrounded the Hale Manor. The wealthy guests had been escorted out into the cold night air, leaving only Victor Hale, his high-priced corporate defense attorneys, Prosecutor Julian Vance, and young Clara Montgomery under the harsh glare of police floodlights.

Victor sat on a velvet couch in his private study, his bow tie undone, clutching a glass of scotch with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. His top lawyer, a sharp-faced man named Richard Stone, stood beside him, aggressively arguing with Julian Vance.

"My client is being harassed based on the baseless ramblings of an uneducated orphan and a horse!" Stone barked, slamming his briefcase onto the desk. "A leather journal proves nothing in a court of law! Anyone could have forged those entries!"

Julian stood near the fireplace, casually flipping through the yellowed pages of David Montgomery's journal. "The handwriting matches David's official land deeds, Mr. Stone. Furthermore, the detailed entries give specific coordinates on this very estate."

Victor froze, his scotch glass stopping inches from his lips. "Coordinates? What coordinates?"

Julian looked up from the book, his eyes fixed on Victor. "According to David's final entry, written hours before his disappearance, he hid a secondary set of financial ledgers and microfilms inside the old stone stables at the northern boundary of your property. Ledgers that prove you were selling smuggled, black-market racehorses to overseas syndicates."

"That's a lie!" Victor spat, standing up so fast his chair overturned. "The northern stables were condemned and burned down six years ago! There's nothing there!"

"If there's nothing there, then you won't mind if the forensic team goes up there with ground-penetrating radar tonight," Julian said smoothly.

Meanwhile, outside in the courtyard, Clara stood beside Obsidian. The massive horse rested his heavy head on her shoulder, completely calm in her presence despite the blaring police sirens and chaos. Clara gently stroked his muzzle, leaning in to whisper secrets only the horse could hear.

A young woman in a police winter coat approached them slowly, keeping a respectful distance from the formidable black stallion. It was Detective Sarah Jenkins, a tough, no-nonsense investigator who had been assigned to the reopened cold case.

"He really doesn't let anyone else near him, does he?" Sarah asked softly, looking at Obsidian in awe.

"He remembers the smell of the people who hurt my dad," Clara said, her voice chillingly calm for an eight-year-old. "He trusts me because I smell like my father."

Sarah knelt down in the snow beside Clara. "Clara, I know you're very brave. But you need to tell me the truth. How did you get into the gala tonight? Who brought you here?"

Clara looked into Sarah's eyes. "Nobody brought me. I walked five miles from the train station. I knew Victor was holding the gala tonight because it was advertised in the newspapers. I knew he would display Obsidian like a trophy. Victor always treats living things like objects he owns."

"Where is your mother, Clara?" Sarah asked gently.

Clara’s lower lip trembled for the first time that night, revealing the vulnerable child beneath the tough exterior. "Mama died two months ago. She was sick for a long time. Before she passed, she gave me Papa's journal and told me to find Prosecutor Julian Vance. She said he was the only man my father trusted."

Sarah felt a sharp sting in her chest. An eight-year-old girl, orphaned and alone, carrying her murdered father's darkest secrets across the state to bring down a billionaire.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the upper floor of the estate, followed by the sound of glass shattering.

"What was that?" Sarah demanded, instantly pulling her sidearm.

"It came from Victor's private office!" Julian shouted, sprinting out of the study and down the hallway toward the grand staircase.

Sarah and Clara followed close behind, with Obsidian trotting right at Clara's heels, his heavy hooves clattering loudly on the marble tiles. They burst into the upper study just in time to see a shattered window frame swinging in the cold winter wind.

The room was in complete disarray. Desks were flipped, paper documents were scattered everywhere, and a heavy wall safe was standing wide open, empty.

Victor Hale was kneeling on the floor, bleeding from a scratch on his cheek, clutching an empty leather folder.

"They took it!" Victor screamed in a panic, his voice cracking with pure terror. "They took the original master files!"

May you like

"Who took them?" Julian demanded, running to the window and looking down at the dark estate grounds below.

Victor looked up, his eyes wide with genuine horror. "The Syndicate... they watched the live broadcast of the gala. They know the secrets are getting out. If I don't give them Clara and that journal by morning... they're going to kill us all!"
