THE SILENT ECHO OF BLOOD / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Poisoned Porcelain

The porcelain cup stopped less than an inch from Ethan Blackwood’s lips. Steam rose from the dark amber liquid, carrying the quiet, floral scent of bergamot and dry chamomiles.

"Daddy, no! Don’t drink it!"

Seven-year-old Lily burst across the polished white marble floor of the grand dining hall, her oversized yellow pajamas swishing loudly. Her tiny hands lunged upward, grabbing his wrist with frantic strength.

The delicate teacup jolted violently. Boiling liquid sloshed over the rim, scalding Ethan’s hand before dripping onto the mahogany dining table.

Ethan froze. He stared down at the small child clinging to his forearm, her breathing ragged, her tear-filled eyes wide with pure panic.

No child had called him Daddy in seven long, agonizing years. Not since that cursed autumn night in Boston when doctors at St. Jude Memorial Hospital handed him a cold blanket and told him that his pregnant wife, Amelia, and their newborn daughter had perished in a sudden, catastrophic hospital fire.

Behind Lily, the head housekeeper went completely pale. Nora stood frozen near the threshold of the kitchen entrance, one trembling hand pressed flat against her chest.

"That’s..." Nora stammered, her voice thin and unnatural. "That’s..."

Lily looked back over her shoulder at Nora. The raw fear in the little girl’s eyes instantly transformed into terror of a different kind. She released Ethan’s hand, took two nervous steps backward, and lowered her head.

"I’m sorry, sir," Lily whispered, her small voice trembling. "It’s nothing. Really. I was just... having a bad dream."

Ethan slowly lowered the silver-rimmed porcelain cup back onto the saucer. "What did you call me?"

Lily stared fixedly at the floorboards. "Sir."

"No," Ethan’s voice was soft, yet possessed a sharp edge that made the air in the room freeze. "Before that."

Nora hurried forward, the heel of her shoes clicking hurriedly against the marble. "She has nightmares, Mr. Blackwood! I am so sorry. She becomes confused when she wakes up in the middle of the night. She mistook you for her father."

Lily was supposedly Nora’s orphaned niece. She had lived in the servants’ wing of Ethan’s sprawling estate for nearly two years. Ethan had seen her occasionally—reading quietly near the back spiral staircase or drawing pictures at the kitchen table late at night. She was quiet, polite, and strangely familiar, but every time he had attempted to engage her in conversation, Nora had instantly appeared, making polite excuses to pull the child away.

Tonight, however, Lily did not look confused. She had looked utterly terrified—not of the darkness, but that he might swallow that tea.

Ethan reached under the edge of the mahogany table and pressed a hidden security button. Across the mansion, heavy electronic locks clicked shut. The grand double doors locked automatically.

"Nobody leaves," Ethan declared quietly.

Nora’s face tightened. "Sir, that isn’t necessary. The child is just disturbed—"

Ethan looked at the untouched, steaming cup. "Drink it."

Nora hesitated, taking half a step backward. "I... I don’t drink tea at night, Mr. Blackwood."

"You prepared it," Ethan said, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "It’s my usual evening blend. If nothing is wrong with it, then one sip shouldn’t hurt."

Nora’s hands began shaking uncontrollably. "I am the housekeeper, sir, not a—"

"Drink it!" Ethan shouted, his voice thunderous.

Without waiting, Ethan dialed his private physician, Dr. Samuel Hayes, who resided in the guest wing. Within twenty minutes, the tea was brought into the mansion’s private medical laboratory.

Dr. Hayes returned a short while later carrying the cup inside a sealed, transparent evidence bag. His face was grim.

"Ethan," Dr. Hayes said gravely. "There’s enough lethal digitalis in this tea to stop a grown man's heart within fifteen minutes. If you had swallowed it, you’d be dead before an ambulance could arrive."

The room became dead silent.

Nora suddenly turned and sprinted toward the service hallway. But two heavy-set private security officers bolted from the foyer, intercepting her at the stairs and pinning her against the wall.

"I was forced!" Nora screamed, tears streaming down her pale face. "They threatened me! I had no choice!"

Ethan ignored her shrieks. He knelt in front of Lily, who was shivering in her yellow pajamas. He reached out gently, cupping her cheeks.

"Sweetheart," Ethan asked, his voice cracking with emotion. "How did you know?"

Tears rolled down Lily’s cheeks. "I saw Aunt Nora put liquid drops from a dark glass bottle into your teapot..."

"Why didn’t you tell someone before?"

"She said... she said if I talked to you, she would send me back to the dark room," Lily sobbed.

Ethan’s heart sank. "What dark room?"

"The place where they kept me in the basement before we came to this house."

Nora shouted hysterically from across the room, "She’s lying! The child is insane!"

Lily flinched, burying her face into Ethan’s shoulder. As she did, a delicate silver chain slipped out from beneath her pajama collar. Hanging from the chain was a tarnished silver locket.

"May I see that?" Ethan asked gently.

Lily hesitated, then nodded, slipping the chain over her head and handing it to him.

Ethan popped the small latch open. Inside was a tiny, faded photograph of his late wife, Amelia. She was lying in a white hospital bed, exhausted but smiling, holding a tiny newborn wrapped in a pink blanket. On the back of the photo, written in unmistakable blue ink, were five handwritten words:

*OUR LILY LOOKS LIKE YOU.*

Ethan stopped breathing. Blood roared in his ears. His unborn daughter’s name had been Lily—a secret name he and Amelia had chosen in private just days before the fire. No newspaper had ever published that name.

He turned the locket over further. Folded tightly inside the rear compartment was a faded plastic hospital identification bracelet:

**BABY GIRL BLACKWOOD**

**MOTHER: AMELIA BLACKWOOD**

Ethan looked up at the child, his chest heaving. Gently, he pulled back the sleeve on her left shoulder. There, near her collarbone, sat a small, distinctly crescent-shaped birthmark. It was the exact same birthmark recorded in the single ultrasound photo he had kept in his wallet for seven long years.

His hands shook violently. "Where did you get this locket, Lily?"

Lily pointed a small finger toward Nora. "I took it from her closet... She said I wasn’t supposed to ever touch it."

Ethan stood up slowly, a cold, lethal rage washing over him. He walked over to where the security guards held Nora.

"Who is she?" Ethan demanded through gritted teeth.

Nora stopped struggling, weeping openly now. "I... I was hired to look after her..."

"For seven years, I believed my daughter burned to death!" Ethan yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I buried an empty coffin next to my wife! Who gave you this child?!"

"Your uncle!" Nora sobbed. "Victor! Victor Blackwood paid me!"

Ethan froze.

Victor Blackwood. His father's brother. The acting co-chairman of Blackwood International. Under the strict terms of the family trust established by Ethan's late grandfather, Victor would inherit absolute controlling interest of the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate only if Ethan died without a surviving heir.

Lily was not just Ethan’s miraculously surviving daughter. She was the sole legal barrier standing between Victor Blackwood and absolute ownership of a global corporate empire.

"Victor arranged the fire at St. Jude's," Nora whimpered. "He paid a paramedic to burn the maternity wing. But a nurse rescued the baby and tried to hide her. Victor found out, bribed the nurse, and paid me to keep the girl hidden away under a false identity."

"Then why bring her into my home two years ago?!" Ethan roared.

"Victor wanted her close," Nora sobbed. "He needed to monitor her... to see if you would ever recognize her features as she grew older. And..."

"And what?!"

"The board of directors votes on the new chairman tomorrow morning," Nora whispered, horror in her eyes. "Once you were dead from the poisoned tea, Victor planned to have Lily quietly removed and declared an impostor if anyone ever asked questions."

Ethan was paralyzed by the revelation. Before he could process the sheer evil of his uncle's plot, Lily pulled gently at his jacket sleeve.

"Daddy..." Lily whispered. "There’s something else."

She reached into her deep pajama pocket and pulled out a small, cracked smartphone.

"I took this from Aunt Nora's nightstand," Lily said quietly.

Ethan took the phone. The screen was lit up with a live streaming video feed from a high-security medical room. On the bed lay a gaunt, frail woman with long dark hair and surgical scars across her face.

Despite the scars, Ethan recognized her instantly.

Amelia.

His wife was alive.

The live timestamp in the corner read: *TODAY - 11:42 PM*.

Suddenly, on the screen, the heavy metal door of Amelia's room opened. Victor Blackwood walked into the camera frame holding a clear glass syringe filled with a dark liquid.

Lily looked up at Ethan with wide, innocent eyes and whispered, "He told Aunt Nora that after you drank the tea... Mommy was next.
