Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Darkness swallowed Ethan’s mind, heavy and suffocating.
When his eyes finally fluttered open, his head throbbed with a vicious, dull ache. The sweet, chemical taste of the knockout gas still hung on his tongue.
He tried to move his hands, but heavy iron manacles bound his wrists to the arms of a cold, steel chair. His ankles were strapped tightly to the chair legs.
He was in a bright, sterile room with no windows—a private medical bay inside the lower hold of *The Leviathan*. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead.
Sitting across from him at a small metal table was Julian, immaculate as ever in his dark suit, meticulously cutting the tip of a Cuban cigar.
"Ah, you're awake," Julian said smoothly, lighting the cigar with a gold Zippo lighter. "The dosage was calculated to keep you unconscious for precisely three hours. It is currently 3:00 AM."
Ethan gritted his teeth, testing the steel bonds against his wrists. They didn't budge an inch. "Where is Marcus?"
"Your security director is alive... for now," Julian puffed a cloud of blue smoke into the air. "He and his surviving men are locked in the lower bilge tanks. If you cooperate, they will be released at international waters. If you don't... I simply flood the tanks."
Ethan glared at the man who had given him life, feeling nothing but pure contempt. "You won't get away with this. The police—"
"The police are currently investigating a massive fire at Pier 42," Julian interrupted with a cruel smile. "According to official port reports released an hour ago, a tragic explosion destroyed an illegal smuggling warehouse, killing dozens. *The Leviathan* left American territorial waters thirty minutes ago. We are currently in international waters, Ethan. No coast guard, no warrants, no laws."
Julian pulled a thick legal document from a leather briefcase on the table and slid it across to Ethan, along with a sleek silver pen.
"This is the unconditional asset transfer deed," Julian explained, tapping the paper. "It liquidates all assets of the Blackwood Estate and transfers absolute power of attorney to the Julian Foundation. Sign it."
Ethan let out a cold, raspy laugh. "And why would I ever sign that?"
Julian took a slow drag of his cigar, pulled out a satellite tablet, and placed it on the table facing Ethan.
The screen lit up.
Ethan’s blood turned to ice.
The live camera feed showed the safe house where Amelia and Lily were hiding. But the camera wasn't outside—it was *inside* the safe house living room.
On the screen, two armed men in black tactical gear stood quietly near the doorway while Amelia read a book to Lily on the sofa, completely unaware that the guards inside their room were Julian's sleeper agents!
"You see, Ethan," Julian whispered leaned forward, his eyes burning with lethal precision. "Victor wasn't the only one who placed spies in your life. Half of the security firm you hired to protect your family works for me. A single text message from my phone, and those men will execute Amelia and Lily in their sleep."
Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped animal. "You... you would murder your own daughter-in-law and granddaughter?!"
"They are collateral," Julian said coldly. "In the grand game of empire, individuals are meaningless. Only the dynasty matters. Sign the paper, Ethan. Save their lives. Live as a wealthy exiled prince somewhere in South America. That is the best offer you will ever receive."
Ethan stared at the satellite screen. He saw Lily smile at Amelia, pointing to a picture in her storybook. His heart broke into a thousand pieces. He knew Julian was incapable of mercy. Even if he signed, Julian would eventually eliminate them all to prevent any future claims to the Blackwood fortune.
He had to buy time.
"Unchain my right hand," Ethan said, his voice flat and defeated. "I'll sign."
Julian smiled triumphantly. "A wise choice, my son."
Julian stepped forward, pulling a small silver key from his vest pocket to unlock the heavy manacle on Ethan's right wrist.
As the steel cuff clicked open, Ethan didn't reach for the pen.
With explosive speed, Ethan smashed his liberated right fist straight into Julian's throat!
Julian gasped, clutching his neck in agony, staggering back against the table!
Ethan grabbed the heavy silver Zippo lighter off the table, flipped it open, and ignited the flame, slamming it straight into the exposed alcohol-based hand sanitizer dispenser mounted on the wall!
*BOOM!*
A violent wave of blue fire erupted instantly across the wall, setting off the ship's automatic fire suppression sprinklers and triggering deafening emergency alarms throughout the vessel!
Water poured down from the ceiling in heavy sheets. Electrical sparks rained from the lighting fixtures.
Julian coughed hysterically on the floor, struggling for air, pointing his satellite phone at Ethan. "I'll... I'll give the order!"
Before Julian could hit the button on his phone, Ethan leaned down, grabbed the silver key from Julian's hand, unlocked his left wrist and ankles, and slammed his heavy boot down directly onto the satellite phone, crushing it into a hundred pieces!
"Order cancelled," Ethan snarled, grabbing Julian by his coat lapels and pinning him against the burning wall.
"You... you crazy bastard..." Julian choked out, panic finally filling his arrogant eyes. "The ship's automated lock system will seal this section!"
"Then we burn together, 'Father'," Ethan growled.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the medical bay was blown inward with a loud crash!
Marcus burst through the steam and water, holding a heavy wrench in his hand, soaked to the bone!
"Ethan!" Marcus yelled over the roaring alarms. "I broke out of the bilge! We have to move now! The engine room is taking on water!"
Ethan didn't let go of Julian. He dragged the silver-haired mastermind by the collar, throwing him over his shoulder like a sack of grain.
"We're taking him with us," Ethan yelled to Marcus. "He's coming back to face a judge!"
They sprinted through the flooding, smoke-filled corridors of *The Leviathan* as alarms screamed and water rushed up the stairwells. They reached the top deck just as the massive ship began to tilt dangerously to the starboard side.
Outside, a pitch-black storm raged over the Atlantic Ocean. Heavy waves crashed over the bow.
"Where's our chopper?!" Ethan screamed over the howling wind.
"Pilot had to pull back due to heavy gun fire!" Marcus yelled, pointing toward the churning black ocean below. "We have to jump to the life raft!"
Suddenly, Julian broke free from Ethan's grip, stumbling back toward the ship's raised stern railing!
"I will never sit in a courtroom!" Julian screamed wildly into the storm, his grey hair whipping in the wind. "I am Arthur Blackwood! I am Julian! I built the world!"
"Father, no!" Ethan reached out a hand.
Julian looked at Ethan one last time—a look of terrifying, unhinged pride—and stepped backward off the edge of the ship into the dark, roaring waves fifty feet below!
Ethan lunged forward to the railing, but there was nothing to catch. The black ocean swallowed Julian instantly.
"Ethan!" Marcus grabbed his arm, pulling him back as the deck tilted sharply. "He's gone! Jump!"

Ethan took a deep breath, looked back at the sinking leviathan, and leaped off the edge into the freezing, dark sea.
