Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

Silence fell over the high-rise boardroom like a heavy velvet curtain. The twelve powerful board members stared in utter shock—first at Ethan, who was supposed to be dying in an ICU, then at the small, beautiful young girl standing proudly at his side.
Victor stammered, his fingers twitching violently against the mahogany table. "E-Ethan...? This... this is an outrage! You can't just barge into a private executive session with a child!"
"I can do whatever I want in my own building, Victor," Ethan said calmly, stepping toward the head of the table.
He tossed the sealed evidence bag containing the poisoned teacup directly onto the center of the glass table. It landed with a loud *thud* right in front of the board members.
"What is the meaning of this?" asked Arthur Vance, standing up to inspect the bag.
"That," Ethan announced, pointing a finger at Victor, "is the tea my uncle’s hired operative attempted to force down my throat last night. It contains forty milligrams of pure digitalis. Enough to kill a man in minutes."
Gasps echoed around the room.
"Lies!" Victor roared, slamming his uninjured hand onto the table. "He’s insane! He's suffering from a nervous breakdown! Security, remove him!"
None of the security guards moved. Marcus stepped into the room behind Ethan, placing two heavy hands on his tactical belt, locking eyes with the building guards.
"Your security team works for the Blackwood Estate, Victor," Ethan said softly. "Not for a murderer."
Ethan reached down and gently placed his hands on Lily’s shoulders. "Members of the board, seven years ago, my uncle staged a fire at St. Jude Hospital. He bribed doctors, forged death certificates, and declared my wife and newborn daughter dead. All so he could secure temporary control of the family trust."
"That's a lie! You have no proof!" Victor screamed, sweat pouring down his forehead. "Your daughter died in that fire! Everyone knows it!"
"She didn't die," Ethan said, his voice filled with overwhelming emotion. "She was hidden away in my own servants' quarters under a fake name. And last night, she risked her life to save mine."
Ethan pulled a thick manila folder from his jacket and slapped it onto the table. "Inside this file are three things. First, a court-certified DNA test completed two hours ago by the Chief Medical Examiner of Boston, proving 99.9% genetic parentage between myself and Lily. Second, the full sworn confession of Nora Higgins, the woman Victor paid to hide my daughter. And third..."
Ethan paused, looking Victor dead in the eyes.
"...the audio recording of Victor's conversation with his head surgeon at 'The Sanctuary' private facility, where my wife Amelia was kept hostage for seven years."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Board members stood up, shouting at Victor in disgust and horror.
"You monster!" Arthur Vance shouted at Victor. "You kept Amelia caged?!"
Victor’s eyes darted wildly around the room. He knew he was finished. The walls were closing in. His entire seven-year empire of lies was crumbling in a matter of seconds.
Suddenly, Victor reached into his suit jacket with his right hand, pulling out a small snub-nosed revolver.
"Back off!" Victor shrieked, pointing the gun wildly at Ethan and Lily. "All of you, back off!"
Women screamed and board members scrambled under the table for safety.
"Victor, put the gun down," Ethan said, stepping directly in front of Lily, shielding her small body with his own. "It's over."
"It's not over until I say it's over!" Victor screamed, his eyes bloodshot with insanity. "I spent my whole life in your father's shadow! Then in your shadow! I earned this company! I built it! You were just born lucky!"
"You built nothing," Ethan said coldly. "You stole."
Victor pulled back the hammer of the revolver. "If I can't have the Blackwood empire... nobody will!"
*BANG!*
A gunshot rang out, shattering the heavy silence.
Victor blinked, his eyes wide with surprise. A small red hole appeared in the center of his chest. He dropped the revolver, staggering backward against the floor-to-ceiling glass window, before sliding down to the floor in a pool of his own blood.
Behind him, Chief Miller of the Boston Police Department stood at the broken boardroom doors, holding a smoking service weapon, flanked by a dozens of tactical SWAT officers.
"Clear!" Miller barked, as officers rushed into the room, securing the perimeter.
Chief Miller walked over to Ethan, lowering his weapon. "Are you alright, Ethan?"
Ethan breathed a heavy sigh of relief, kneeling down immediately to hug Lily tightly. "We're alright, Chief."
Lily buried her face in Ethan's neck. "Is the bad man gone, Daddy?"
"Yes, my sweet girl," Ethan whispered, tears of relief falling from his eyes. "He's gone forever."
An hour later, the boardroom was cleared. Victor Blackwood was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, and his corrupt co-conspirators on the board were being led out in handcuffs by federal agents.
Ethan held Lily’s hand as they walked out of the Blackwood Tower into the bright morning sunlight. Waiting at the curb was a private medical transport ambulance.
The rear doors swung open. Inside, propped up against soft white pillows, was Amelia. She was wearing a warm coat, her pale face illuminated by the morning sun.
Lily stopped in her tracks. Her tiny hand trembled in Ethan's grip.
"Mommy...?" Lily whispered softly.
Amelia looked up, tears springing to her eyes instantly. She held out her trembling arms.
"Lily... my baby girl..."
Lily broke into a run, throwing herself into her mother's arms. Mother and daughter embraced, weeping and holding each other close, making up for seven long years of stolen time.
Ethan walked over, wrapping his strong arms around both of them.
For seven years, his life had been shrouded in shadow and grief. But standing there in the morning light, holding his wife and daughter in his arms, Ethan knew that the darkest night was finally over.
Yet, as they sat together in the quiet back of the vehicle, Ethan noticed a strange detail. On the floor of the ambulance, inside Amelia's belongings from the facility, was an old leather journal.
Ethan picked it up and flipped to the last page, written in fresh black ink dated just yesterday.
*Victor was never the master mind. He was taking orders from someone else.*
Ethan's heart stopped. He turned the page, looking at the initial signed at the bottom of the page:
*Property of the Blackwood Trust - Overseen by Master Julian.*
Ethan slowly turned to look back at the corporate tower. High up on the top floor, a shadow stood near the broken window, watching them.

The nightmare was far from over.
