Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

The basement smelled of gasoline and old rust. Red light from the emergency strobes flickered across Victor’s furious, sweat-slicked face. Amelia hung limp in his grasp, her eyes half-closed, her body fragile as paper.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Ethan," Victor sneered, holding the sputtering red flare inches from an open fuel valve on the wall. "You should have died in the fire seven years ago along with your little family."
"You took seven years of my life, Victor," Ethan said, stepping slowly forward, his gun locked on Victor's head. "You hid my child in my own house as a cruel joke. You kept my wife trapped in a basement like an animal."
"It wasn't a joke! It was insurance!" Victor screamed. "If you ever suspected me, I would have sent you pieces of them in the mail! But you were weak! You spent seven years wallowing in grief while I built this company into a weapon!"
Amelia suddenly moved. With every last ounce of her remaining strength, she slammed her elbow back into Victor's ribs.
Victor gasped in pain, dropping the flare.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
A heavy bullet tore through Victor's shoulder. Victor shrieked, stumbling backward into the dark shadows of the utility room. Ethan lunged forward, catching Amelia in his arms just as she collapsed.
"Ethan..." Amelia whispered, her voice a fragile raspy breath. She reached up with a scarred hand, touching his cheek. "Is it really you...?"
"It's me, my love," Ethan choked back tears, holding her tightly against his chest. "I'm here. You're safe."
"Our... our baby..." she whimpered.
"She's alive, Amelia. Lily is safe at home. She saved my life tonight."
Tears streamed down Amelia's face as she closed her eyes, exhausted, weeping softly against his chest.
Behind them, the sound of heavy boots echoed down the stairs. Marcus and four heavily armed officers burst into the basement, weapons raised.
"Clear!" Marcus shouted, before seeing Ethan and Amelia. "Mr. Blackwood! We have the perimeter secured! BPD SWAT is arriving outside!"
"Find Victor," Ethan commanded, his eyes cold as ice. "He's wounded in the maintenance tunnel. Do not let him leave this building alive if he resists."
"Understood, sir!"
Ethan carried Amelia up the stairs into the cool night air, where medical helicopters were already landing on the manicured lawn of the estate. Emergency paramedics rushed forward with a gurney, taking Amelia into immediate care.
As the helicopter blades whirred in the darkness, Marcus walked up to Ethan, his face dark.
"Sir," Marcus said quietly. "Victor escaped through an underground drainage tunnel. He had a secondary vehicle waiting half a mile away."
Ethan wiped a smudge of soot from his face. "Where is he going?"
"Our intelligence indicates he’s heading straight back to Boston. The emergency board meeting at Blackwood Headquarters is set for 8:00 AM—just three hours from now. He knows if he can force the board to vote him in as permanent Chairman before you present evidence, he gains legal immunity under the corporate charter and control of all assets."
Ethan looked down at his watch. 4:45 AM.
"He thinks he can still win," Ethan said, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his face. "He thinks he can walk into that boardroom and take my father's chair."
"What are your orders, sir?"
"Call my personal legal team. Contact the press. And prepare my suit," Ethan said softly. "We are going to give my uncle the grand finale he deserves."
At 7:45 AM, the top floor of the Blackwood Tower in downtown Boston was buzzing with tension. Twelve of the most powerful corporate directors in America sat around a massive oval glass table.
At the head of the table sat Victor Blackwood, his left arm wrapped in a tight sling concealed beneath an expensive tailored charcoal suit. His face was pale, but his eyes burned with desperate ambition.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Victor announced, pounding his gavel against the wooden block. "As you know, my nephew Ethan has failed to appear this morning due to... sudden and severe health complications."
Whispers broke out across the room.
"Is Ethan ill?" one senior board member asked, concerned.
"Tragically, yes," Victor lied smoothly, a tragic expression plastered across his face. "Ethan suffered a massive cardiac event late last night at his estate. He is currently in critical condition, unable to perform his duties. Under Section 4 of the Blackwood Charter, in the event of the Chairman's incapacity or absence of an heir, absolute authority passes to the senior living relative."
Victor raised a pen. "I ask for an immediate vote to transfer full voting control and executive power to me."
"Wait!" board member Arthur Vance stood up. "We need medical confirmation! We cannot simply strip Ethan of his power without proof!"
"The proof is in the emergency medical report signed by his household staff!" Victor snapped, glaring at Arthur. "We have a ten-billion-dollar merger with European investors at 9:00 AM! We cannot afford weakness or delay! Vote now!"
"I second the motion," another corrupt director piped up, nudging his papers.
"Then it is settled," Victor grinned, leaning forward to sign the official corporate charter documents. "By majority vote, I hereby assume—"
*BANG!*
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges, slamming loudly onto the floor.
The room erupted in screams of panic as board members scrambled back in their leather chairs.
Through the dust and smoke, Ethan Blackwood walked into the boardroom. He wore a crisp dark suit, his eyes sharp as flint.
In his left hand, Ethan carried a clear plastic evidence bag containing the poisoned porcelain teacup.
And holding his right hand, wearing a beautiful blue dress and looking bravely up at the powerful executives, was seven-year-old Lily Blackwood.
Victor dropped his pen, his face turning the color of ash.

"Good morning, Uncle," Ethan said, his voice echoing through the silent boardroom. "I brought you your tea."
