Chapter 2 - Shadows of St. Jude

Ethan’s vision blurred with pure adrenaline. The image on the small screen was agonizingly real: his wife Amelia, long presumed dead, lay helpless in a sterile, padded cell while his ruthless uncle stepped toward her with a syringe.
"Get the cars ready," Ethan barked at his head of security, Marcus, a former Special Forces operator whose face turned to stone. "We move now."
"Sir," Marcus replied, checking his sidearm. "We don't know the location of that feed yet. If we rush in blind, Victor's men might kill her before we breach."
Ethan grabbed Nora by the collar, slamming her against the wall. "Where is she? Where is Victor keeping my wife?"
Nora was weeping hysterically. "I don't know the exact address! I swear to God! It's a private psychiatric facility somewhere in the Berkshire Mountains... Victor called it 'The Sanctuary'!"
"Trace the IP address of this live stream immediately!" Ethan ordered his tech specialist over the comms.
Within minutes, the trace yielded a match: an unregistered private asylum nested deep in the pine forests of western Massachusetts, two hours away by road.
Ethan knelt back down beside Lily. "Sweetheart, I need you to stay here with Marcus’s best men. You are safe now."
Lily wrapped her small arms around Ethan’s neck, squeezing with all her tiny strength. "Don't leave me, Daddy. Don't let him hurt Mommy."
"I won't," Ethan promised, kissing her forehead. "I will bring her home."
Ethan jumped into the back of an armored SUV alongside four heavily armed security guards. As the vehicle tore through the estate gates into the rainy night, Ethan called the commissioner of the Boston Police Department, a man who owed his career to the Blackwood family.
"Chief Miller," Ethan said, his voice flat and deadly. "I need an immediate SWAT team dispatched to the Blackwood Medical Facility in the Berkshires. Victor Blackwood is holding my wife hostage. He is attempting to murder her tonight."
There was a long silence on the line. "Ethan... your wife died seven years ago. Is this some kind of joke?"
"She is alive, Miller! I am looking at a live feed of him holding a needle to her neck! Send the team now, or I swear to God I will burn your precinct to the ground!"
Meanwhile, inside the silent room at 'The Sanctuary', Victor Blackwood flicked the side of the syringe with his fingernail, watching a tiny drop of clear liquid squirt from the needle tip.
Amelia’s eyes fluttered open. Her pale, scarred face twitched as she tried to pull away, but her wrists were strapped down with heavy leather restraints.
"Rest easy, my dear Amelia," Victor said with a smooth, sickening smile. "Seven years you’ve survived in this lovely little room. Seven years of keeping you quiet while I drained Ethan’s resolve bit by bit. But tonight, it all ends. Ethan is currently taking his final breath in his mansion."
Amelia let out a raspy, painful gasp. "Ethan... no..."
"Oh yes," Victor chuckled softly, leaning over her. "He drank his evening tea. By tomorrow morning, I will announce his tragic heart failure to the board. I will inherit the crown. And you, my sweet niece-in-law, will finally join him in eternity."
He pressed the needle against the delicate skin of her arm.
Suddenly, the heavy iron door burst open with a deafening crash.
"Victor!"
Victor spun around, startled. Standing in the doorway was Dr. Charles Vance, the lead administrator of the illegal facility, his face white as paper.
"Victor, we have a problem!" Vance gasped. "The security feed from the Blackwood estate just went dead! And our servers are detecting a high-level cyber breach tracing our IP!"
Victor’s face darkened with rage. He yanked the syringe back. "What do you mean dead? Did Nora fail?"
"I don't know!" Vance yelled. "But an unmarked convoy of heavy vehicles was just spotted passing the state highway toll booth five miles from here!"
Victor swore under his breath, jamming the syringe into his coat pocket. "Lock down the facility! Prepare the incineration unit! We erase all evidence—including her! Do it now!"
On the highway, Ethan’s convoy hurtled through the torrential rain at over one hundred miles per hour. Ethan stared at the phone screen, but suddenly the live feed flickered and cut to static.
"They cut the feed!" Ethan slammed his fist against the leather seat. "Faster! Drive faster!"
"Sir, we're two miles out!" the driver called back. "Roads are slippery!"
"I don't care! Drive!"
As the armored SUV rounded a sharp mountain curve, the dark, menacing outline of a gated fortress appeared through the dense trees. Heavy steel gates blocked the road, guarded by armed men in black uniforms.
"They're waiting for us!" Marcus yelled, drawing his weapon. "Hold on!"
The SUV didn't slow down. It smashed straight through the heavy iron gates, sparks flying through the dark night air as glass and metal shattered.
Gunfire immediately erupted. Ethan ducked low as bullets pinged off the armored body of the vehicle.
"Clear the gatehouse!" Marcus barked into his radio as guards poured out of the SUV, returning fire with lethal precision.
Ethan didn't wait for the firefight to end. He kicked open the damaged door, grabbed a tactical handgun from the floor, and ran straight toward the heavy wooden double doors of the main asylum building.
Inside, alarms blared loudly, flashing red light across the cold concrete corridors. Ethan kicked through a heavy side door, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Amelia!" he roared into the empty hallway. "Amelia!"
A guard rounded the corner, raising a rifle. Ethan fired three rounds without hesitation, dropping the assailant instantly.
He ran down the winding corridor, following the floor plan that his tech team had managed to download before the feed was cut. He reached the heavy steel door labeled *CELL 104*.
The door was locked with a digital keypad.
Ethan fired two heavy caliber rounds directly into the electronic lock, kicking the heavy door open with all his weight.
Inside, the room was empty. The leather straps on the bed had been sliced open. Fresh drops of blood trailed across the concrete floor toward a rear exit staircase.
Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. "Amelia!"
He sprinted toward the rear door, following the blood trail down into the dark, damp basement level of the facility. The smell of smoke and gasoline hung heavy in the damp air.
At the end of the dark corridor stood Victor Blackwood, holding a lit road flare in one hand and dragging a weak, weeping Amelia with the other toward a heavy metal furnace.
"Stop right there, Ethan!" Victor screamed, his eyes wildly unhinged. "Take one step closer, and I drop this flare into the gas line! We'll all burn together!"
Ethan raised his gun, pointing it straight at his uncle's forehead. His hands were steady as stone.

"Let her go, Victor," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Or I put a bullet between your eyes before that flare hits the floor."
