Chapter 10 - The Blood in the Pines

"Contact left! Contact left!" the lead tactical operator shouted over the encrypted comms channel as muzzle flashes flared from the shadows of the dimly lit hunting lodge living room.

Glass shattered in a cascade of crystal needles as rounds punched through the timber walls. Julian yanked Clara down behind a heavy stone retaining wall just outside the front porch, drawing his own sidearm with practiced, lethal efficiency. His eyes scanned the treeline with predatory intensity.

"Stay down, Clara!" Julian ordered, his voice laced with absolute panic masked by tactical discipline.

"I didn't survive sixteen years in the foster system to hide behind a rock now," Clara snapped back, her eyes locked on a figure darting through the pine trees toward a waiting all-terrain vehicle parked at the rear of the cabin.

Before Julian could stop her, Clara sprang forward, sprinting low and fast across the clearing toward the side entrance of the cabin. Inside, the tactical team had already neutralized two of the Blackwood operatives, pinning a third against a burning stone fireplace where hundreds of sensitive financial files were being reduced to ash.

Clara rushed past the smoking hearth, ignoring the searing heat. Her eyes locked on a metal lockbox sitting right beside the flames—partially charred, but bearing the distinct corporate seal of Blackwood Global and her uncle Arthur’s initials.

Without hesitation, she grabbed the scorching metal box with both hands, ignoring the blistering pain on her palms, and yanked it away from the fire just as a heavy pair of combat boots slammed onto the wooden floorboards behind her.

"Drop the box, little girl," a harsh, gravelly voice growled. A massive mercenary in black tactical gear leveled the barrel of an assault rifle directly at the back of Clara’s head.

Clara froze. Her muscles locked. The smell of burning paper and gunsmoke filled her lungs.

"I said, drop the box!" the mercenary barked, stepping closer, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Clara slowly turned around, her face completely expressionless, her eyes burning with an intense, terrifying fire that made even the battle-hardened mercenary hesitate for a split second.

"You should have checked who owned the security clearance on that box before you pulled the trigger," Clara whispered calmly.

Before the mercenary could process her words, a deafening roar echoed through the cabin. Julian burst through the interior doorway, his sidearm barking twice in rapid succession. The mercenary spun backward, his rifle clattering to the floor as he collapsed heavily against the wood-paneled wall.

Julian rushed to Clara’s side, his chest heaving as he grabbed her shoulders, his eyes scanning her frantically for injuries. "Clara! Are you hit? Dammit, what were you thinking?!"

"I was thinking that this box contains every name, every bank account, and every offshore wire transfer linking Blackwood Global to the murder of my parents," Clara replied, holding up the charred metal lockbox with steady hands, her palms bleeding slightly from the heat.

Julian stared at her for a long moment, breathless, before a slow, fierce grin spread across his face. He shook his head in absolute disbelief. "You really are a Sterling through and through."

"No, Julian," Clara said, turning toward the door as sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the dark pine forest. "I'm much worse than a Sterling. I'm the one who's going to bury them all."
