Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the System

With the Sterling board purged and the primary conspirators behind bars, the corporate world expected Clara to settle into a comfortable, quiet routine of signing documents handed to her by high-priced executives. They expected a figurehead—a naive former maid who would be easily manipulated by veteran board members hungry for power.

They severely underestimated her.

At 2:00 AM, three days after taking control, Clara sat alone in the executive suite of the Sterling Tower, the panoramic windows reflecting the neon glow of the sleeping city. Her laptop screen glowed with lines of raw server logs, financial algorithms, and encrypted audit trails that standard accountants had missed for decades.

Her background wasn't just working as a maid; during her years struggling through college, she had secretly majored in cybersecurity and forensic accounting, funding her education by hacking into corporate vulnerabilities and ethically reporting them under a pseudonym. She didn't just inherit an empire—she possessed the exact technical skill set required to dismantle its deepest, darkest secrets.

As she dug deeper into the subsidiary shell companies, a strange anomaly caught her attention. A recurring transaction of two million dollars every month was being funneled out of a Sterling subsidiary called 'Horizon Tech' and into an unlisted, private security firm registered in the Cayman Islands under the name *Blackwood Global*.

"Blackwood Global..." Clara murmured, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. She bypassed the primary firewall using a zero-day exploit she had discovered years prior, gaining root access to their private server archives.

What she found on the server made her blood run cold.

It wasn't just financial embezzlement. It was a comprehensive dossier on her own life—dating back to the day she turned six years old. There were surveillance photos of her college apartment, receipts from the grocery store where she worked, medical records from her time in the foster system, and—most terrifyingly—a series of encrypted communications between her uncle Arthur and the head of Blackwood Global discussing 'termination protocols' scheduled for the exact week of the charity gala.

They hadn't just stolen her inheritance; they had been hunting her. And the charity gala encounter hadn't been a random accident at all.

The door to her office clicked open. Clara didn't look up from her screen, her fingers resting lightly on the keys.

"I wondered how long it would take you to find that," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the shadows near the private elevator.

Clara slowly turned her chair around. Standing by the doorway was Marcus Vance, her lead corporate litigation attorney, the very man who had handed her the dossier on her first day in power. But gone was the warm, professional smile. In its place was a predatory smirk, and in his right hand, he held a suppressed semi-automatic pistol pointed directly at her chest.

"Marcus," Clara said, her voice remaining unnervingly steady. "I wondered when the real snake in the grass would show its fangs."

Marcus chuckled softly, stepping further into the light. "You're remarkably calm for a former maid who's about to experience a tragic, accidental fall from the twenty-fourth floor of her own corporate headquarters."

"You think killing me will stop the audit?" Clara asked, her eyes narrowing slightly as she subtly shifted her right hand toward the panic button hidden beneath the mahogany desk.

"Who said anything about stopping the audit?" Marcus smiled darkly, raising the pistol slightly. "Once you're dead, the board will declare you mentally unstable due to the sudden shock of your newfound wealth. A new executive board—duly advised by yours truly—will take control, liquidate the assets, and transfer the remaining four billion dollars to an offshore account before anyone even realizes the body is cold."

Marcus stepped closer, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "It’s nothing personal, Clara. It’s just very lucrative business."
