Chapter 13 - The Patriarch's Return

The air in the executive suite dropped ten degrees as Victor Sterling stood leaning on his silver-tipped cane, his cold, calculating eyes scanning the room with the practiced arrogance of a man who viewed human lives as disposable chess pieces.

"Uncle Victor..." Julian breathed, his hand instinctively dropping toward his holster as he stepped in front of Clara. "We buried you thirty years ago in Zurich. Your plane went down in the Alps. There was a funeral, a closed casket, a memorial plot in the family crypt."

Victor chuckled—a dry, rasping sound that lacked any warmth. "A closed casket is a wonderful invention when you want to disappear from the public eye, Julian. When you control the coroners, the police reports, and the Swiss banking authorities, staging a fiery plane crash is remarkably simple. I needed to step into the shadows to build the real empire—the one operating behind the facade of Sterling Global and Blackwood Security."

Clara slowly stood up from her leather chair. She didn't flinch, she didn't tremble; her eyes locked onto the man who had pulled the strings of her family's destruction before she was even born. "You were the shadow investor. You funded the yacht explosion that killed my parents. You orchestrated the framing of my uncle Arthur, the drugging of my grandmother, and the systematic theft of my identity."

Victor smiled broader, nodding approvingly. "Brilliant deduction, my dear. Like father, like daughter. You have your mother's stubborn spine, but your father's tactical mind. Too bad you inherited their tragic habit of fighting battles you cannot possibly win."

Victor tapped his cane sharply against the marble floor. Suddenly, the private elevator doors chimed again, sliding open to reveal four heavily armed Blackwood operatives holding tactical breach weapons, their red laser sights painting the walls of the executive suite.

Julian’s hand gripped his sidearm tighter, but before he could draw, Victor raised his hand lazily. "Ah, ah, Julian. Put the gun down. My men have sniper rifles trained on this exact glass suite from three surrounding rooftops across the street. One twitch of your finger, and this entire room becomes a tomb."

Julian gritted his teeth, his muscles tensing as he weighed the impossible odds.

Clara, however, remained unnervingly calm. She walked slowly around the mahogany desk, stopping just three feet away from Victor, looking directly into his cold, aged eyes.

"You think holding a gun to my head gives you leverage, Victor?" Clara asked softly, her voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying an electric intensity that made the old man's smile falter slightly.

"It gives me absolute control," Victor replied, recovering his composure. "You will sign over eighty percent of Sterling Global's voting shares to my private Cayman trust, you will publicly recant your press conference statements as a fabricated stunt, and you will quietly board a private cargo flight to South America tonight. Do that, and I might let you and your little cousin draw breath."

Clara stared at him for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, a faint, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of her lips.

"Victor," Clara said softly. "Did you really think I didn't anticipate that the true master would crawl out of the woodwork once the bait was dropped?"

Victor’s eyes narrowed instantly, a sudden flash of unease flickering across his face. "What are you talking about?"

Clara raised her right hand and snapped her fingers twice.
