Chapter 10 - The Secret Offshore Vault

We arrived at the regional FBI field office at 3:00 AM under the cover of absolute secrecy. The underground garage was heavily fortified with armored transport vehicles and tactical response units standing at attention. Special Agent Mara Voss escorted me directly into the high-security briefing bunker, where digital monitors displayed complex financial flowcharts and satellite maps.

“The hit squad that attacked the safe house was tracked down within twenty minutes,” Mara announced, tossing a stack of interrogation files onto the metal conference table. “Four local mercenaries hired through a private security firm in the Cayman Islands. They confessed almost immediately after realizing they were working for a bankrupt family that couldn't even pay their bail, let alone their contract fees.”

“And Victoria?” I asked, setting my sleeping daughter’s carrier down on a secure padded cot in the corner of the room.

“Victoria has been transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary two hundred miles away, completely cut off from all outside communication,” Mara replied firmly. “She’s facing an additional twenty years for obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit murder. Her reign of terror is officially over.”

“Except for one thing,” I said, walking over to the main computer terminal and plugging in my encrypted thumb drive. “When I downloaded the server logs from the safe house breach, I noticed an automated data transfer running simultaneously to an unknown offshore IP address.”

Mara’s eyes widened slightly as she stepped behind my shoulder. “An automated backup?”

“Not a backup,” I corrected, typing a rapid sequence of decryption keys into the terminal. “It was a dead-man’s switch. Victoria set up a hidden slush fund containing twelve million dollars in untracked bearer bonds, hidden under a false trust in the British Virgin Islands. If she was ever arrested and her personal accounts frozen, the switch would automatically trigger a payout to whoever holds the master encryption key—unless I manually override it.”

A complex, glowing firewall interface flashed red across the monitor screen, demanding a multi-factor biometric and cryptographic authorization code.

“Who holds the master key?” Mara asked, her voice dropping to a tense whisper.

“Evan,” I replied quietly. “He’s the only one who knows the secondary passphrase. Even from inside his holding cell, he still holds the key to their final hidden fortune.”

Mara stared at the screen, then looked over at me. “Do you want me to pull him back into the interrogation room? We can legally compel him to give up the passphrase under federal asset forfeiture laws.”

I looked down at my daughter, remembering the cold, callous way Evan had told me to stay in the bathroom and not make things worse while his sister danced under a crystal chandelier. The man who had traded his family, his integrity, and his wife’s safety for a superficial aristocratic dynasty.

“No need to compel him, Mara,” I said, a cold, calculated smile forming on my lips. “Evan thinks that twelve million dollars is his golden ticket out of prison. Let’s pay my loving husband a little visit, and let him make his final choice.”
